What do I need to install to use a USB mouse on a computer that uses the old fashioned round plug in.

I want to use a usb mouse ,, not use an adapter, I thought there may be some software to activate the port so the computer will recognize it.
I would not have suggested the USB to P/S2 adapter.
If you have an available USB port on your machine, you should just be able to plug the cable into that port.
I do have a port , but the computer dosn't know what to do with it ,, no software for it in computer.
In fact, tell us all.
What computer, desktop or laptop. What make and model? How many USB ports does it have and how many (old style) PS/2 ports? How many unused USB ports are there?
What type of USB mouse is this? Did it come with any software, (eg, on a CD)?
You cannot fit a USB cable into a PS/2 port. it physically will not fit, so if all you have is a spare PS/2 port and all you have is a USB mouse, you will need some sort of adapter.
