what can i do

hi all of u my requset to you is telling me what to do
i have bought a new pc and that's the qualifications
1-operating system:win98
2-processor:pentium 4 2.4
3-ram :256 DDR
4-mother board:gigabyt
5-hard disk:WD 40 GIGABYT
after all of this qualifications which i sought high and will make my pc so fast in contrary i found it so slow.please help me and tell me what to do.

This system should be fast enough for practically everything you want, except those very few programs which would profit from more RAM.

One should know much more to do some diagnoses:
- what software did you install
- what are the virtual memory settings
- what software do you find slow
- what background programs are running
- resources used (resource meter)
- CPU used by processes (download Windows 95 kerneltoys from Microsoft and run wintop)
- other statistics as shown by System Monitor
- connection to Internet
- did you manage to get viruses and spyware on this new machine already?
- performance problems right out of the box, or only later on?

Computer home-made, custom build or brand (which brand and model)?
Did you get it running with everything installed?
Motherboard drivers for Windows 98 installed?
What videocard? Installed correct drivers?
