Overall image quality has improved since the D50; cameras can produce larger prints and using higher ISO without faultering. Color is subjective, but all cameras default color can be changed, or can be changed in processing.
The Nikon D5100 and D7000 use the same sensor and will output virtually identical IQ. The D7000 adds more rugged construction, a brighter viewfinder, a more advance autofocus system, and more external controls. The Canon 60D rather slots in between the two Nikon's, leaning closer to the D7000.
The D7000's 18-105mm kit lens is better optically compared to the Canon's 18-135mm kit lens, but obviously has a little less focal length. The D5100's 18-55mm kit lens is also very good, but not as versatile.
Another camera worth looking at is the Sony A65.
Hi Lori! I have been following your video blog and have found it very useful!! However I still am back and forth on what camera to buy and really just want an experienced NON BIAS opinion that is specific for my situation! I went to school for photography but it was all film back then so as far as digital goes Im not the sharpest nail in the box and a lot of the terminology I dont understand. Through out the year I more or less take photos for personal use, however durring the summer, I work as a photographer for a high school study abroad company. The company has 5 different programs which means 5 different photographers, one for each program. This is my 3rd year working for them and they are big fans of my work. The first year I was in Italy, last year France, and this year they want me to shoot Spain and Greece(2 months). Here is the thing, I have been shooting with a Nikon D50(dont laugh, it was my first digital camera and has been great) Every year the progam puts out a brochure with the photos from each program. My photos are the strongest, but the actual image quality and color is lagging. I need a camera and lens that can produce quality images and I really dont want to spend a lot since it is more or less a summer job. What I am currently looking at is:Nikon d7000, Nikon d5100, and Canon 60d. So?!? What do you think is a good camera that would meet my needs, at a good price? It also has to be durable and easy to use! Thanks for your help!Hannah Enyoureyez@aol.com
