what are these twisted / leaning alphanumaric values for?

When you register on some service on the web at the end of the form it says to fill the alphanumeric values shown in the small picture having some background also. What are these called please? And what purpose these serve to the owner of the page? Please explain a bit.

It's to prevent spam. Computers have a hard time submitting a form if they can't indentify the letter/number combination - therefore only humans (with legit reasons) can use it.
