HD related tasks become slow or less responsive. The HD becomes noisy or alot more noticable, either due to failing h/w or reseeks during its tasks, thus slow. While modern HDs do get hot or uncomfortably warm to the touch, presistant heat build-up will be a problem for a HD. Look into those areas. If you have any doubts, start backing up now. Use any warranty if applicable still. HD makers provide some FAQs or info on the topic, visit thier support websites.
