What are latest programs/hardware for Ubuntu 10.10

Apr 22, 2011 1:03PM PDT

Welcome to this discussion thread. I would like to discuss the latest programs/hardware I have running with Ubuntu 10.10, so far as a computer enthusiast I have tried numerous distros with Linux to find out that Ubuntu was the top of the line for most of them. I know you may disagree and I am sure there are some that are better than Ubuntu. I just want to share with you what hardware/programs I have installed so far on Ubuntu 10.10:

You may find that old versions fall out of support fast.

I see Ubuntu is past version 11. This discussion is about old version 10 so there is likely to be broken stuff and no one to fix it.

That is unless you want to pitch in.

Ubuntu 10 is still supported and used.

But yes it man be better to upgrade to 11.

If so.

Then they have to learn to use that support. Or get better at self support.

Recommend to Upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04
May 31, 2011 2:18PM PDT

I would like to inform readers of this forum that there is continued support for Ubuntu 10.10, however I would like to recommend that you upgrade your Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04. You will notice some great changes to include the Unity interface. If you don't like the Unity interface you can continue using the same interface as in the previous 10.10 gnome version. You can also check out the Ubuntu forums at http://ubuntuforums.org/ for more details. Check out this link at http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=superos for the Ubuntu Super OS for more included features for Ubuntu.

You should look into..

your /etc/apt/sources.list file and compare it with default for same Ubuntu version. Probably mistake ended up in it somehow.
Or just restore default version of that configuration text file.

If you use

KDE... Try KDE N LIVE (kdenlive). I am tinkering with it and seems to be an very easy video editor. For what I read on the Mandriva Forum is that only works with KDE desktop. If you are using Ubuntu you have to switch to Kubuntu.

I just edited an *.m2t file format and converted to *.VOB

Seems much richer than Kino and much simpler than Cinelerra.

If you like Star Maps and Astronomy in general. Use Stellarium (Desktop Planetarium), last time I checked it had a Linux and MS version. Can be downloaded via Mandriva Control Center, is on the repos.

For the GUI Lovers

KDE as desktop environment.

Load a plugin called:
kde-rootactions-servicemenu

That will allows you to do whatever you want with the right click of the mouse. Kind of like Run As on windows.

The other trick is
Open the command console and type su -
That is SU with a space and a dash and hit enter
Give Root's Password and hit enter

Type konqueror or dolphin and hit enter.

That will allow you to run the GUI with Root's privileges.

Very dangerous if you do not know what are you doing can render your computer useless.

You can edit, delete, move, copy, modify any file you want on the computer.

Use at your own risk.
