A savvy user is still the best protection. No antivirus today blocks user actions to install many trojans, malware and other bad things.

So while you can debate best, you remain your best PC's defense.

I'm no total expert but I hate McAfee. It's overpriced and it bogs down your system, and it has low detection rates compared to other competing products.
Personally if you just want an all around all-in-one and don't mind long scans & aren't really big on the whole privacy shazam, try HerdProtect.

If you really want the bulk (although Avast! does send some info to third parties, apparently for all those completely unrelated advertisements!) without sacrificing privacy and still being kinda speedy, my backup laptop uses Avast! Antivirus and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Optionally, you can also use Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit.

In general, just be careful installing and browsing. I wouldn't go on the deep web if I were you, and when installing things, I wouldn't trust any.. cough installers that install installers, and also advertise some of those amazing toolbars. cough
