Wet cell phones - reply to Ask the Experts

Aug 19, 2004 11:00PM PDT

My wife dropped a Kyocera Palm powered smart phone into about 6 feet of water. After it was retrieved, the battery was removed, and it was allowed to dry for several days. Amazingly, it started up like nothing happened, and has been working as normal for the past 2 years.

Water Damage

I have fixed a number of water damaged phones. You have to remember these things

1. Remove the battery ******DO NOT TURN THE PHONE ON
2. Let al the water drain out of the main unit
3. Use a blow drier on a low setting no more than 5 minute bursts then 2 minutes to rest for about 4 cycles
4. Let it airdry for at least 24 hours (Better to take it to a dealer that does repairs during this time.

A dealer will probably use an alcohol swab on it to remove any chemical added to the water and dry it off.

5 If it was salt water dig a hole and bury it, Salt water corrosion sets in about 15 Minutes and is pretty much unrepairable.
