West Wing' ends with graceful transition

May 14, 2006 8:42PM PDT

fter seven TV seasons (and two terms in his fictional White House), the heroic, quirky, often embattled chief executive played by Martin Sheen was succeeded by Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits). As the Bartlet administration came to its inevitable conclusion, so did the NBC drama.

"You did a lot of good, Jed, a lot of good," the first lady (Stockard Channing) told her husband as Inauguration Day dawned.

Bartlet's mood at that moment must have matched many viewers': relief, satisfaction, gratitude and sadness that it was about to be over.

And later on, Abbie Bartlet said proudly, "Jed, you made it. You're still here" -- after the assassination attempt, his battle with multiple sclerosis, and the punishing duties of his job.

Sentiment hung heavy through the hour, both for the characters and the audience. In particular, former chief of staff Leo McGarry, who had died suddenly on the campaign trail as Santos' vice-presidential running mate, was repeatedly recalled (as was, implicitly, the late John Spencer, who played him until his death of a heart attack last December).

"I'm gonna take one final stroll around the joint, to make sure nobody's making off with the cutlery," Bartlet told his secretary (Lily Tomlin) after tending to one final presidential task: signing some pardons in the Oval Office.

I agree !!!

For the past 7 years we also were educated in how government works. The show had a former press secretary form each party as consultants. We saw what angst resulted after minor goof, like the one about green beans, the turmoil when a press secretary mis-spole, and how there were serious differences of opinion that were not always resolved.

Made me hope that there are always such bright and dedicated people serving us, and brought home just what a draining and demanding job the Presidency is, and that whoever holds the Office is human.

Hmmm. Didn't watch it...
May 15, 2006 7:36AM PDT

The few times I tuned in for short periods it seemed like the usual network pap. I hear they did not do a good job with the MS subplot.

Possibly biased because I can't stand Martin Sheen.

I can't judge.....
May 15, 2006 8:00AM PDT

.... how well they addresed MS per se, but I know I learned more than I knew about it.

I think the focus was more on the fact that he did not reveal it during his first campaign, the impact it had on his wife (who was a physician and gave him injections) and upon his staff having been kept in the dark.

I understand why you don't care for Sheen. There are some other about which I feel the same way. I will say that this is the first role I have seen him in where I didn't think of him as having been Private Slovick.

Since I never watched a complete episode (couldn't)...

maybe I missed how wonderful it was. What I read about their treatment of multiple sclerosis indicated that it didn't impede the character much. The usual early symptoms include extreme fatigue (believe me, I know) among other things which would not be easy to conceal for long, especially for someone in a stressful job.

But that's neither here nor there. I don't expect much from most TV series. I love House, but I have to laugh every time I see them give someone an MRI, because it is so not like what they depict.

I've been a fan of his for years. He played George (various versions) in the British Blackadder series and Bertie Wooster in Jeeves and Wooster. Often worked with Stephen Fry. He's been in a few movies as well.

Wondered alot about something
May 15, 2006 8:01AM PDT

regarding the canceling of the show....

Jed represented a Dem Presidency.

Santos, if I remember correctly, ran as an Independent and won.

Leo, also a Dem, was supposed to be his VP, but died.

The guy Santos picked as his VP .. what was he? Rep or Dem? I don't recall right now.

What if the show went on with that combination with the President an Independent and another 'recognized' party as a VP? Would it have shown the public that it could actually WORK? And was that something taken into consideration when the decision was made to pull the show since it was as popular as it was?

Ummmmmmm

Another one being pulled off the air, I think, is Commander in Chief. Surprise, surprise....a woman strong enough to pull it off even against internal back-stabbing. If it doesn't go off the air, they better get it out of the Thursday slot at the same time ER airs or it will die a slow death anyhow and be canceled. What a shame.

Perhaps a Renegade Dem?
May 15, 2006 10:02PM PDT

I got a very strong impression that he was more of an Independent than a Dem throughout the whole campaign running because he balked at most pressure thrown at him to play the 'party' game, which was why so many thought he would lose at nearly every turn.

Not really.
May 17, 2006 4:08AM PDT

He was picked to run by one of the big players in the party, Josh, and never spoke against it. He was shown to stick to his positions despite opposition in order to play up the "he's his own man" aspect of his character.

Maybe ...
May 15, 2006 8:31PM PDT

... most viewers don't want TV/producers/actors trying to "teach" them what could work. The whole premise of how Davis became Prez in CinC doomed that show from the beginning. Never saw West Wing. Can't stomach Sheen. For political shows I preferred Spin City. I love the L&O shows, usually I don't end up having to cringe and think "now why did they have to go there" with some "message".

That you and EdH never watched WW says a lot about
May 15, 2006 11:37PM PDT

your "open-mindedness," Evie. I watched JAG, for Pete's sake -- and you can't find a more right-wing-oriented dramatic show than that! You only missed the most intelligently written show on the air for the last seven years, and gaining a lot of accurate insight into how things work in Washington. (As a native Washingtonian, I already had a lot better feel for that than most...) Speaking of which, I really miss Mark Russell (I assume he's now in ill health, as he was in his 70's the last time I saw him...)

You accusing anyone else of not having an open mind is absurd on its face.

What's openminded about watching ANY fictional TV show? It may be well written, blah, blah, blah. So what? I've heard it was also extremely fake at times, but since I never saw it, I won't comment. That's not why I didn't watch it. I never had an interest, and you can't really get into those serial type shows unless you can watch every episode anyway. Now that I have a DVR I will probably start watching a few regular shows again if there's anything worthwhile on.

I've watched practically NO TV for the past couple of years except for news, TLC type programs, History Channel and the occasional Comedy Central comedian.

I'm so impressed you watched JAG! LOL. I know a lot of men who would have watched that show just for Catherine Bell Wink

I try to avoid network dreck for the most part....
May 16, 2006 12:26AM PDT

has nothing to do with politics or open-mindedness. Most of that stuff is artistically vapid. Junk food for the mindless.

In your opinion it was intelligently written. The few excerpts I saw were NOT.

- Collapse -
You're confusing it with "Commander in Chief," Toni.
May 15, 2006 11:30PM PDT

MacKenzie Allen was the indpenedent President.

On WW, Santos was also a Dem -- his bipartisan move was selecting Vinick (Aldan Alda, as a moderate Republican) as Secretary of State.

I'll definitely miss the show -- I only missed one episode in seven years (the VCR failed due to a power outage), and sure wish they'd continued it. Gotta make way for football, though!

For a while, it looked as if Commander in Chief might be a worthy successor, but the network completely mishandled it, and then (presumably) cancelled it after their bungling killed its audience. (They kept pre-empting it, and then moved it to opposite ER and Without a Trace -- a "death sentence slot" if ever there was one!)

Incidentally, the original concept for WW was for Sheen to be a minor character, only seen at the end of each episode, as in the pilot they reran Sunday night.
