Democrat McDermott again in hot water over Saddam comments

Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., who earned headlines across the globe last year for criticizing President Bush while in Baghdad, is enmeshed in a new controversy over remarks he made about the capture of Saddam Hussein.

In an interview Monday with KIRO radio station, McDermott said the U.S. military could have found the former Iraqi dictator "a long time ago if they wanted."

Asked if he thought the weekend capture was timed to help Bush, McDermott chuckled and said, "Yeah. Oh, yeah."

McDermott went on to say, "There's too much by happenstance for it to be just a coincidental thing."

*sigh*

Hi, Evie,

Hios comments were absolutely uncalled for, and, IMO, without foundation.

Disliking and disagreeing with a President is one thing, but to imply that any Commander-in-Chief would endanger his troops to bolster sagging approval ratings is ridiculous.

I put this in the trash pile along with Trent Lott's fiasco that cost him his leadership role. As it sifts down through Newt's latest mouthings, the stink is worse/

Hi, Angeline.

Well, given the fabrications that got us into this war and endanger lots of American troops and Iraqi civilians, I wouldn't put it past Bush. But if he were going to keep Saddam's capture to bolster him when he needed it, now is not the optimal time to use it, so I think the charge highly unlikely. And I don't see where bringing the charge does any service to the Democrats.

With that comment you're just this side of delusional.

"fabrications" of intelligence that were bandied about in the Clinton Admin and carried over to the present where action was taken.

Hi, Ed.

We all know about the WMDs that weren't found. Because of Saddam's capture, the death of another theory has gotten very little media play:
Iraqi denies meeting hijacker; Contradicts Bush's prewar claims of Saddam link to 9/11.
"U.S. officials cautioned that Ani may have lied to interrogators about the meeting, but the CIA and FBI eventually concluded that the meeting probably did not take place and that there was no evidence that Saddam's government was involved in the hijack attacks, the Times said."

So no WMDs found and no tie to 9/11 -- how exactly is the War on Iraq a battle against terrorism, except in Iraq? OTOH, Saddam did try to have Bush 41 assassinated -- I'm sure that had nothing to do with the attack on Iraq that has sucked up our ability to do much else militarily elsewhere in the world.

Nice evasion again but...
Dec 17, 2003 12:04AM PST

Papers found WITH SADDAM are showing links with Bin Laden followers and supporters.

The same evidence was relied on by Bush that Clinton and Gore cited previously.

Evidence shows up in several places in the report to the UN that you studiously ignore.

Evidence of burying weapons in the desert accumulates daily (how many MIGs now?) as well as evidence that much material was transshipped into neighboring countries.

Has Hoffa been found? How many years has the search gone on?

How did Germany obtain the Rail gun barrels so quickly after Hitler had a use for them when such was proscribed? A hint you can check up on--shortly before and immediately following the end of WW I many factories sprouted new chimneys that were absent or in rubble shortly before the rail guns were placed in use by Hitler.

Again, SAME evidence was agreed on in the same way by both Clinton and Bush--Bush acted, clinton should have.

.... that Bosnia, or Haiti, or Somalia) would take people's minds off of impeachment, or White Water whatever was "against" him at the time.

I resented the comments about his actins, and I resent this one about Bush.

IMO, for ANY president to use combat for personal political purposes (though I am aware that politics are involved in all combat) would be an abuse of power.

Hi Angeline,

I think it goes both ways questioning the integrity of our politicians. In this case, the fact that it was a Congressman -- and now, sigh, Madelaine Albright -- publically expressing such sentiments it is a bit over the top. The Dem candidates' attacks on Bush at a time of war seem to be very misguided. I don't recall any such leading up to the 1996 election. I mean some may have questioned Clinton's policies but I don't recall an almost daily drip-drip-drip of accusaitons of lying, and conspiracy theories coming from sitting Congressmen and Senators (often overseas!) as I'm seeing now. I would stand corrected if anyone can refresh my memory.

Albright says she was 'joking' ...

But witnesses to Albright's comment said the ambassador did not appear to be joking Tuesday when she suggested President Bush may reveal bin Laden's capture as an "October surprise" ...

"She said, 'Do you suppose that the Bush administration has Usama bin Laden hidden away somewhere and will bring him out before the election?'" said Fox News analyst and Roll Call executive editor Mort Kondracke. "She was not smiling."

Two makeup artists who prep the guests before their appearances also reported that Albright did not ask her question in a joking manner.

Perhaps you can cite proof that the administration was fabricating things? Until then, they are not a given.

... but shrill is a very good description of the woman's manner of speech, and it's a funny play on her name. Alas, I only regret I can't take credit for coining it.

She is another one who has made some disgusting comments both to our troops in Iraq and regarding Saddam's capture. Did you catch her act on any of the Sunday shows last week? I only caught the pretty in pink appearance on MTP but reached my limit about half way through.

I could almost wish a Democrat wins the Presidency in '04 because then we'll be spared a Hillary campaign.
