Question two-message limit
Apr 17, 2011 7:48PM PDT

Might as well express my dislike of rationing posts to a limit of two in the Question category. I understand there is no limit in the Discussion category.....but when I post, I am asking a question. In the many, many years I have been on these Forums, I have come to favor and value the replies of certain moderators and posters over others. That said, I also want to see many replies submitted from which I can choose a reply that suits me. After all, the Forum is supposed to be a learning experience and rationing of incoming information defeats that purpose methinks.....miki

We are looking at the whole picture for the Q&A post type. It is something completely different that we are trying out and we will be tweaking and adjusting things accordingly to hopefully make it useful for everyone.

Thanks again for your feedback!

Wrong discussion
Apr 18, 2011 5:47AM PDT

This thread is about the recent forum changes here at CNET. Your problem seems unrelated to that.

Please re-post in another forum, from the list here;
http://forums.cnet.com/

Be sure to provide enough information so help can be given, eg Make and model of the computer, which Operating System, and also which video are you talking about and which file did you try and download?

Trouble using new forum format with iPad
Apr 20, 2011 2:44AM PDT

I use my iPad often to read and post in the CNET forums, but now with the new format I have trouble doing the basic "Reply" functions. For example today, I tried to reply to a post in the Home Audio & Video forum, and I could put a subject topic in, but I could not add anything to the subject body of text. But I could add my reply when using a computer. Something isn't right in the new forum coding.

A known issue...
Apr 20, 2011 2:51AM PDT

The Message Body field does not work on mobile devices, and Lee has already filed a bug for it. They'll most likely have to disable the new WYSIWYG editor for mobile users, but we'll see what they come up with.

Yes, the WYSIWYG editor is the cultprit

We'll work something out. As you pointed out John, we will probably have to disable it for mobile users.

Thanks!

car forum and cell phone forum
Apr 20, 2011 7:56PM PDT

I can't find the car forum and cell phone forum. How do I access these two forums? Thank you. user470

Good question
Apr 20, 2011 8:00PM PDT

I found them, but it isn't that intuitive.

Look in the Forum Landing page here: http://forums.cnet.com/

Then mouse over the "Electronics" entry and you will find them both in the list that pops up, "Car Tech" and "Cell Phones".

You may have to scroll down a little before you mouse over, to see the full list.

AVG Forum
Apr 22, 2011 9:52AM PDT

Is AVG running the avg forum or is someone at CNET running it. Accessing a forum run by the company that
created the software is only benifical to the COMPANY not the END USER.

I Tried to install a new version of avg on my computer and it will not complete the install. Every time I tried to
UNINSTALL the Program it started Installing Again.

There are at least 15 files in my computer from avg that Vista will not let me remove. One of these files is
most likely the reason I CAN NOT add a NEW version of avg.

But I bet NO ONE at Cnet Tried this.

Contact me if you can help.

Run the AVG uninstall program
Apr 22, 2011 12:12PM PDT

They have a program there you can download that will uninstall all previous versions. If it doesn't, then boot in safe mode and run the file. It MUST be run if you are upgrading from the version 9 to AVG2011.

It is run by CNET...
Apr 22, 2011 12:16PM PDT

The AVG forum on CNET is indeed run by CNET and managed by the same volunteer moderators that oversee other CNET forums. AVG does have company representatives that also contribute in the forum, addressing issues to the best of their abilities alongside all the other members.

However, as this thread is about the new features and format of the CNET forums, not AVG (the company or its products), I suggest you start a new thread in that forum to address and questions and issues you have.

John

search missing?
Apr 23, 2011 2:18AM PDT

Am I just not seeing it, or don't you have the ability to search a forum? Takes too long to go thru all the posts - wouldn't a search be much easier?

- Collapse -
We have a forum search...
Apr 23, 2011 2:41AM PDT

The search bar is in the top right corner of every page on the site. It automatically searches based on what site you're on, so it will search the forums when your in the Forums, downloads when you're on Downloads, et cetera.

Hope this helps,
John

Apr 23, 2011 12:46PM PDT

thanks for your answer; i figured that part out, but I would like to be able to search in the forum I am currently viewing, and that feature doesn't seem to be available.

- Collapse -
Ah, gotcha...
Apr 23, 2011 1:49PM PDT

You can filter by forum on the results page, but you are correct that there is no way to explicitly state 'this forum only' from the search bar; you must search first and then find the forum in the filter list. Perhaps a feature that could be added at some point...

I am beginning to see
Apr 24, 2011 5:05AM PDT

that this format has inherent difficulties. The format being, Question > Answer(s) and/or Clarification request.

As an example, have a look at the forum discussion here;
http://forums.cnet.com/7723-7574_102-524561.html?tag=nl.rCOMBINED

1] The OP asks a question.

2] Kees replies first, with an answer

3] OP replies to Kees with a comment that requires a reply

4] John replies, (to the first post as an Answer), to the OP's comment with more information.

5] I ask for Clarification.

So. two Answers, possibly neither what the OP wants.

However the post listing looks like this;

1] OP
5] My Post
2] Kees reply
3] OP comment
4] John's reply

The 'flow' of the discussion is being interrupted, and those who view the thread at some other time will not understand and will find it difficult to follow.

I know this would happen in the previous format, but at least new posts were not 'inserted' above older posts other than when in a sub-thread. It is not at all clear that my post insertion is later than the two answer posts.

Lightbox for new threads is annoying
Apr 24, 2011 10:38AM PDT

If you click outside of the popup it closes and you lose everything you had written. I accidentally did this on a relatively short post, but it would have been incredibly annoying if I had spent a long time writing it!

Disturbed videos
Apr 30, 2011 5:40PM PDT

CNET videos are disturbed. It seems like because of the lack of graphics memory, low internet bandwidth or CPU inefficiencies. But when I checked into another computers, the issue was same there too.

- Collapse -
Could you explain?
May 1, 2011 9:31AM PDT

What do you mean by "disturbed?" Distorted video, lots of stopping and starting, or something else? They play as expected here, but it may be possible to troubleshoot the cause of the issue.

John

P.S. This thread is about the recent forum upgrades - you should create your own thread to discuss potential issues with CNET videos.
