It's a "bug fix" bug
Apr 14, 2011 4:46AM PDT

Hi Mark,

We made some last minute adjustments to help visual presentation in IE7, and it caused this bug to come back. We're looking into it.

Ahh sorry, meant to say
Apr 14, 2011 4:53AM PDT

I meant to say, this was in Firefox.

Ohh, and is ^ this supposed to happen? Buttons, but no icons. And you may be able to see it from the image, that I can only type short lines, although Preview and Submit are OK.

Another image below;

A clue perhaps? I am in the middle of typing another post (reply). Am I only allowed one set of icons per open posting box? Happy

Mark

Oops! Looks like I broke it. Getting 'Insertion Marker in the preview"

Correction.

The ^ was pointing up towards the formatting icons. Obviously you don't see those in actual replies.

Hey Mark
Apr 14, 2011 6:38AM PDT

There was an issue temporarily where the old site page would load but you would see buttons for the new visual post editor. That should be resolved now. Let us know if you continue to see it. Thanks!

Automatically tracking threads whnenever you
Apr 14, 2011 5:12AM PDT

make a post is a horrible idea. The box is checked by default and should NOT be. Those are worthless anyway because it takes hours to get the tracking notices, unlike the ROP's which come right way like they should. Tracking thread notices should also be immediate and should be optional and not automatic.

Rod, there is a reason behind this.
Apr 14, 2011 6:00AM PDT

Thanks for the feedback Rod, but we do have a reason behind this.

The reason why we have the Tracked discussion box pre-checked is because we'd like to see more folks come back to follow up on the discussion they either started or have participated in. What I often see in forums (at least for the non-regular visitors), are people who start a discussion or ask a question, but then that person is no where to be seen again, because they either forgot about it or can't find their post.

With this feature being set up in this manner, we are hoping that these folks will be reminded of what they had started, because I honestly believe that if our members have contributed their time and knowledge to another persons question, they should at least get some acknowledgment that their post went to good use, by having that member return to follow up.

In addition to this, there is a high possiblity that many of our newer forum users may not know that they can track a discussions and with this pre-checked, it might be pleasant surprise to them to find out that this feature is available to them.

I hope you understand our reasoning behind this, Rod. But I will add that in the near future we will more than likely make this feature a user set preference so that you can either opt in or opt out to track discussions when submitting a post.

Thanks again for your time and feedback.

-Lee

I still don;t like it, It is the same as
Apr 14, 2011 7:46AM PDT

the thread we have had going at Calendar of Updates for 2 or 3 years now called "Hall of Shame" with the hundreds of complaints about things like this being PRE-Checked. Also, like I posted earlier, it is worthless because it takes hours before the notices come. It should NOT be PRE-checked IMO.

There ARE things I DO like though. Happy I like the "views". We should have had that years ago. All the other forums have had them forever. I also love the "mouse over" feature sol see the first part of what has been posted.

Completely understood.
Apr 14, 2011 8:14AM PDT

Our team had a little chat about this and we are going to make this change to have the track discussion unchecked by default. We will get this out as soon as we can--possibly tomorrow, if not on Monday.

I agree with you, I like the views too--I've been wanting that for the forums for years. And now we have it! Grin Woo hoo!

Cheers!

One more issue with this
Apr 14, 2011 10:08AM PDT

I accidentally forgot to uncheck the box on a reply so I am now subscribed to replies. How can I unsubscribe from a tracked discussion when I no longer want to track it?

Never mind

I found the answer in my profile.

If you're in the thread itself
Apr 14, 2011 11:25AM PDT

You can also click on the "Tracked" button to get to the tracked discussions page. Finally, you can always click directly to it from the CNET toolbar. Just click your username. In the popup that opens, you'll see a link to "tracked discussions".

The New Look
Apr 14, 2011 5:13AM PDT

I like the new look except for one thing, and I may be in the minority here: When in any forum looking at the posts, do we need to see a pop-up window showing the content of the post? For me it just seems to get in the way, and I'm happy just seeing the title of the post instead of seeing the body of the post pop-up.

- Collapse -
Thanks for the feedback Dan.
Apr 14, 2011 6:23AM PDT

I know you like to read everything Dan Happy .

The reason why we decided to add this feature is to give our forum readers an opportunity to view a snippet of the first post without having to open the thread entirely. This way if the topic doesn't interest them, they can quickly move on to another. If you do not want to see the snippet of the posts, all you have to do is simply not hover your mouse cursor over the subject line.

Thanks for the feedback.

working. The regular "reply" buttons work fine. There is one more "question" thread is V&S that I also can not answer. Same problem. Like I said above, it is only the "Question" threads that have the "answer this" button that I have having a problem with. All the others wolrk fine.

Here is the other one

I'm able to open the form in FF4 when I click on the "answer this" button and the "request clarification" link. We'll keep digging.
