weird wired: access denied

Apr 15, 2005 5:42PM PDT

I've a Compaq desktop and a Dell notebook, both running XP Pro [SP2], wired connected with an ethernet switch. Setting up a network I encountered a puzzling situation. I found out that the two computers and the hub can ping each other, that both have Internet access, but on my notebook I can work with my desktop folders under network places, but not the other way around, i.e. on my desktop I've no access to my wired connected notebook. I get the message: Network computer is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied'. The network settings on the computers are just the same. The only difference I can imagine, is that Windows on the desktop is using FAT32 file system and my notebook NTFS. To my opinion this can't be the origin of my problem. But what else?

computer, first by name then by IP address.

2) Make sure some resource is set to be shared.

3) Check that file and print sharing is enabled on the Exceptions tab of Windows firewall.

4) Pray to the Networking gods.

same problem
Apr 25, 2005 5:33AM PDT

i had the exact same problem except my laptop is wireless. both drives are NTFS. i could access folders on the desktop from the laptop but not the other way around. i'm not sure why this worked, but i went to "system properties" and under the "computer name" tab cliked the "network ID" button and followed through the wizard. even though i had done this before, way back when to make sure both computers were in the same workgroup, somehow that got confused. anyway, that worked for me.

if you're not using "simple file sharing" the other thing might be to check the properties of the particular folder you're trying to share and under the "security" tab make sure the group "everyone" has "read" permissions.

hope this helps
