Question

Weird resolution on new build.. 2261x1272 ??

Mar 23, 2015 6:16PM PDT

hi i'm hoping this might be a quick fix but i admit it's a new one to me....

just finished a build and installed the gtx 970 drivers via the dvd and then updated everything, and the resolution looks terrible (should be 2560x1440), so i decided to "test" it and get this.....

http://postimg.org/image/4ep4uaj8h/
(a result saying i'm running 2261x1272 which explains why the sizing of everything is off but windows and msi control say 2560x1440!)...

any ideas why this might be? I've tried rolling back/uninstalling the GPU driver with no luck...

Thanks in advance for your help!

Here's my build:

intel i5-4690k cpu
500gb Samsung 850 evo ssd
16gb ddr3 1600 gskills ram
Asus Z97-Plus Mini ITX mb
MSI GTX 970 4gb
Antec 620w Modular psu
IN WIN 901 mini-itx case
(screenshot should be included)

Answer
I don't see your complete windows install procedure.

It's your new build so tell more about drivers after windows installed. For example I can't install the video card driver before the chipset driver. I see no mention of the board's chipset driver package or what display is in use.

Z97 chipset installed first using dvd included with MB including intel display drivers, then installed the GTX 970 drivers via the dvd MSI provides...

I'm guessing the conflict is between the chipset and MSI drivers, uninstalling one and reinstalling always "flashes" to 2560x1400 and then readjusts to the odd resolution,

I'm thinking a full wipe and installation of chipset then GPU drivers may be the solution but i'm still unsure why i'm getting output of 2560x1440 via windows display and the MSI geforce app, but it is obviously not.....

That sounds right

But what display is this? Some, and thankfully it's getting rarer need a monitor.inf file installed.

Another thing is 32 bit Windows. With high end cards like this one, I won't offer support for those on 32 bit Windows. Just too twitchy now.

running windows 8.1 pro x64

You got 2 monitors hookup on this system?

Are both displays QX2710? If not what's the other one.

2 displays

The other is a samsung monitor i was simply using to test with a max resolution of 1080p which it can do fine and all display properties/tests confirm the same. I can run it at 1080p and get the same resolution displayed during tests as is shown in resolution settings. I am not keeping it hooked up in the future was just it to *test* the online test...

I have also uninstalled the GPU and wiped the computer to do a full install tomorrow without the GPU installed and will make sure to load the chipset and update all drivers before even re-attaching the GPU and then working on installing its drivers...

will update more once i've completed the restore, thank you for your responses and help.

The GTX 970 is

a Nvidia product not MSI. I would believe your system resolution setting before I would believe a web browser app telling you it's different.

i can tell the resolution is incorrect with the naked eye... it's not a matter of who to trust, i'm 100% sure the resolution is not 2560x1440
