Weird problem with airport

Jan 3, 2008 2:58AM PST

Hello all,

This is my first post and i am a total newbie when it comes to Mac. I wanted to make a search in the forum for my problem but i just don't know which keywords to use to make a search for this problem. So if this is a repost of a problem which has been addressed in another thread please accept my apologies.

Well, a friend of mine has an iMac. He can connect to the office network with no problem using airport, so we know that no physical problem exists with the airport. However, he is unable to connect to his home network which he can connect to using his vaio and WinXP. Therefore i assume that it is not a problem with his modem at home also. Airport can detect the SSID of the modem but when we try to connect, it keeps telling us that there occured a problem when connecting to the specified network.

Thank you all for your help in advance and please let me know if you need additional information about the system.

A little more information is required

1. What OS is your friend using on their Mac?
2. What brand of Wireless router is he using at home?
3. What Mac does your friend have?

All the above are important to know if we are to help with this problem

hi,

Thanks for the reply.

1. I believe he uses leopard
2. The modem is dlink
3. I need to see my friend to answer this correctly. He bought his mac about a year ago so it is not very out of date although it is obviously not a brand new one. I will give more specific info when i get to see my friend.

Thanks again for the reply.

Wireless Router
Jan 3, 2008 8:43PM PST

As your friend is able to connect to the Work wireless network but has problems at home, is it safe to assume that your friend is using an Apple laptop computer?

Tell your friend to make sure that the wireless router is set to transmit and receive wireless signals of the type 802.11 a/b/g
The wireless router should have a setting for this. If the router is set to receive some proprietary version of 802.11n, then he will have problems connecting.

let us know

There are lots to check for...

Does the home router use MAC (Media Access Control) filtering? Has the Apple Macintosh's MAC address been added to the "allowed" list?

If any changes were made to the router to allow the new Macintosh on, was the router power-cycled?
