Question

Weird memory card seating issue

Sep 15, 2014 7:02AM PDT

I have a desktop that every few months is giving me a 4 post continuous beep. I reset the memory cards and I'm good to go for a few weeks to a month.

Any idea as to why this may be happening? I can understand seating them once or twice in the lifespan of the machine, but this is ridiculous.

It's a Dell inspiron 580, sitting on a tile floor. Just keyboard and mouse and Ethernet connected.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Answer
Is it the orignal RAM or was some added later.

Did you 'clean' the contacts on the SIMMs or DIMMs ?

I did not clean the contacts. Is that something I should try?

With a soft eraser like a PaperMate 'White Pearl"

lightly rub the contacts to remove oxidation. Brush any residue off the RAM and use compressed air to blow any dust out of the memory slots. Make sure the system is unplugged from AC power or if a laptop...remove the battery and then and only then, reinstall the DIMMs or SoDIMMs.

As always...let us know how it works.
