Weird HD problem - constant blink at 2 sec intervals

by Maelek / July 31, 2014 5:55 PM PDT

Sony kds r50xbr1

Just started having problems if I try to watch something in "HD" (PS4 or HD channels Movie Channels on DirecTV), the picture blinks & sound cuts out (perfectly good picture w/ w/ no sound....perfectly good picture w/ w/ no sound...etc) every 1-2 seconds. The menu doesn't blink when I hit menu (well..the picture-in-picture does but not the actual menu information).

I thought that it had to do with just HD channels b/c the PS4 is doing HD resolution and clearly HD movie channels are doing it. However, i set my directv box to show me the non HD version of the movie channels and it still does the blinking but is clearly not an HD quality picture.

Another weird thing is that when I put on HD news/animal planet/non hbo/showtime/cinmax channels, this blinking doesnt happen on either the HD version or standard version. Also, the picture quality b/n the 2 versions is clearly HD and standard.

I've got 2 HDMI inputs and its happening for both but the inputs.

When i try the PS4, I never actually see the PS4 menu on the screen. It just shows black screen w/ the input number and a millisec of w/ no sound....repeat at regular 2 sec intervals.

What could cause this issue?

Sounds like a display defect.

Hope it's in warranty.

Most calls will have you try one thing before they arrange for service. I'll keep it short.

Power off, unplug all HDMI cables and then unplug the power cable. Wait about 10 minutes then plug in power and ONE HDMI cable and re-test.

Weird HD but maybe not HD problem

Ok I tried doing that ..unplugged it all for 20 min and only plugged in one HDMI. It didnt work

I did some more narrowing down of affected channels.

This really doesnt make sense to me now
The only channels affected on DirecTV are
All the PPV channels and these movie channels 500-539 (both HD and non HD versions of these movie channels)
The rest of the HD channels and non HD channels work fine.

The Sony PS4 is still doing the same thing.

I can only wonder if the unaffected channels are being sent in a truly HD format and the others (despite looking dramatically better than the standard version of the channel) are not really full HD (maybe 720 vs 1080p).

Is that even possible?

Sure. But now it's clearly a set issue.

I'm taking your word it's just the set so hope it's in warranty.
