Weird Freezing Problem

by kristianlee03 / October 30, 2004 5:57 PM PDT

Hi guys
Got a weird problem. When I connect to the internet (56k dial-up) the computer stops responding, i.e. when i try to open internet explorer or firefox (or any other program) nothing happens. Although I can browse the computer and look at my folders etc, but task manager does not come up either. However after about 3 minutes everything that i've clicked on while its been frozen suddenly pops up, and the computer starts working again.
I have recently had to reformat, and install a new 200gb SATA maxtor hard drive (my last 4month old one died), which i have in conjunction with an IDE 40gb one. I've got ad-aware, and spybot completely up to date, and have run scans to no avail, and same goes for AVG.
Have installed SP2 before I did anything else in terms of installing. Tried to check the hard drive with maxtor's diagnostics, but could not work, because of the sata controller i have in my computer (incompatible).
Full Specs of the PC below:

200gb Maxtor Sata SB200M0
512 mb PC 3200 Crucial RAM
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (not overclocked)
SB Audidy 2 ZS
Intel Modem
Asus FX 5200 128mb graphics

Any tips??
