Weird coincidence or time to get a new printer?

Oct 6, 2006 10:15AM PDT

I have a LexmarkX83 printer, it is about 5 yrs. old. It was working fine. Then I unplugged it from my PC. It too is that old, a clone running XP Home. Anyway, when I plugged it back in all of a sudden the paper wouldn't feed. It would just go a few inches, it makes all kind of noise like it's printing then just says "clear jam". It sits under my desk so I don't think anything could have fallen into it. Now I would just think it broke but that's kind of a weird coincidence, plus a lady at work told me her printer did the same thing after she unplugged hers. Any ideas or just toss it? Thanks!

Lexmark X83

The short answer: TOSS IT!
The long answer: I owned a Lexmark x83 about 6 years ago. It gave me so many problems...it wouldn't feed the paper. Then it decided on it's own that it would feed 5 papers at a time when I printed. It used ink very quickly, I had to re-install the program twice...the list goes on. When I bought a new desktop, a Lexmark 1150 came with it (package deal). It too, has been a poor performer. So as a result, I wouldn't accept a Lexmark anything, even if it was free. It's not worth the trouble. My recommendation is HP, Epson or Canon. I have several HPs at work, and they are very reliable. Don't go for the lower end (cheap) printers. A mid-range priced printer will serve you nicely. Some of the all-in one units are doing well. Printers are much more affordable these days, you'll be glad you replaced the X83! Good luck...Cheers

Thanks, I was looking at the Canon Pixma line. They seem to have very good reviews across the board.

Either there is a paper remeant in there or the paper sensor is snagged. Unplug printer again and shake it side-to-side a few times, then replug it all in. You needn't be plugged in to the system. Do a "self-test", find out how to do that and check results. If it works, then proceed to hook-up to system and test again, using system testing. Otherwise, anything else maybe too costly or it simply did bite the dust, get another printer. Lst resort, do check for any paper stuck in the printer and understand is the last time to use it and there was real paper jam and you foreced it out "backwards, you could break or unsettle all those littlwe fingers/rooler Lexmark uses.

Thanks for the tips. I'll give it a whirl. Good info to have for future printer problems. I've got a feeling this ones toast though.
