Weird behavior in XP

Feb 29, 2004 8:08PM PST

First, I know I do not have a virus. I've run norton 2004 behind a firewall and router for years and I always update. Ran two full scans and no viruses detected and my windows updates are up to date.

Now, the problem is that strange things started happening such as no REMOVE buttons for some programs that once had them and a lot of my software isn't even showing up there so I cannot uninstall. And this morning my startup programs in the systray are mostly missing. Only norton and my home network are showing up after rebooting twice and my system is running very slow. Any suggestions?

Maybe you are absolutely correct when you are so sure as to say you konw you do not have any virus--according to Norton ? Maybe therein lies your problems. Norton do not reconize or consider lots of Malware or Badware; so called parasites, as 'virus'. Have you tried the "Anti-Parasites Suite" mentioned lots of times in this forum ? Of course, if the problems started yeaterday or a few days before, you can always use System Restore, but that won't be fun. Happy

Parasite removal programs.

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0 notes the five scanning tools and removal tools that are fairly safe. If one does encounter an issue, its always been damage done by the MALWARE. The most common issue being Layered Service Provider replacement which you can use LSPFIX (Hint: use http://www.google.com to find).

The thread has follow on discussions about new links if you don't want to use Google to find an item.

PS. All the tools are free.
