General discussion

Website opinions please.

Aug 6, 2007 12:51PM PDT

Hi all,
I have been learning a bit of HTML and other stuff related to building websites. I am getting on a bit and set myself the challenge to learn something new in the technology field.
I built myself a personal website that I use to display some of my photographs and some other personal stuff.
I would like some opinions and feedback please. All comments, good and bad, are appreciated and will help me to learn more.
Thanks in advance, JIM.

Website is here.

1.

The first thing I would do is make the menu consistent. I'm not a fan of clicking something, clicking back, clicking a new menu link, clicking back... any menu item should be located in the same place on every page. (Also, even the guestbook link, move it up to the menu and add it on every page).

2.

The menu itself... it's OK. For the options you have I'd recommend a drop-down menu of some sort. For example, instead of having "Home Photos" "Car Photos" "Town Photos" ... I'd have a men button that says "Photos" and when they hoover over it, it displays "Town" (or name of town) "Cars" "My Home" something like that. Same with "About Me" ... you could have a drop-down that displays "Blog" "Biography" something like that. I say all that because when I visit the page, 50% of the site is the menu... and the menu should be just a way to get around, and not occupy so much space. I don't see much of the site unless I scroll. This does not have impact.

3.

The clock can be removed... who does not have clock a visible clock on their computer nowadays? Happy

The stat counter, weather, and hit counter... instead of right below each other, make a table with 3 cells... and put one of them in each cell. It won't make it look so crowded then.

Over all...

It's a good website to start with. I've started where you are right now. Your website is not cluttered, it's easy on the eye, and you make a good effort.

Thanks for the feedback.
I see what you mean about having the menu items on each page. I tried it and thought ok so I have implemented that.
As far as the tables at the bottom, they will have to wait until I learn a bit more, not quite sure how to do that yet.
Your feedback is appreciated.

More work done.

I did some more work on the site and changed to a drop down menu. I think it definitely looks better and is much easier to get around.
Thanks again for the feedback.
