Website files - lost forever?

Apr 19, 2005 7:39PM PDT

My PC was hit by a massive virus. The hard drive was sent off for repair. Unfortunately they couldn't retrieve all my files and this included all my website files created on Dreamweaver. I never backed up my website (currently I feel, quite rightly, a complete idiot!). The website is still up and running. How can I now retrieve the files using Dreamweaver? My host Company has mentioned I ftp into my website and save the files direct from my web space but I have no idea how to do this, I am such a novice at this. Please, please help someone.....

Not sure about FTP,
Apr 19, 2005 10:53PM PDT

but can you not surf to your web site then on each page goto File, Save As, (or Save Page As), and make sure that "Web Page.complete" is selected? This should save each page and the contents of each page in the same folder.

Just a thought.

get an ftp program
Apr 20, 2005 12:28PM PDT

Why not download a program like SmartFTP, open the website, and save ALL the files contained on the web server. That way you get all the files, including the ones that aren't linked anywhere. Then open dreamweaver and your index page, it should all be there then.

DW & Backing Up Your Site
Apr 20, 2005 2:50PM PDT

May I ask how you got your files to the server in the first place? I created a Site within DW which gave me the option to update the files on my server every time I save my files as I work on them on my computer. This way, my computer version is also the same as my server version. If this sounds familiar, then you should be able to download the files to your computer from the server.

Use the Get Icon
Apr 21, 2005 8:55PM PDT

to the left of the post icon (blue arrow) you use to upload your files to your hosting server there is a green arrow... it does the opposite of post. It will retrieve your website and place the files on your machine.

wsftp

Download wsftp from http://www.ipswitch.com/ and install it. The software is free. Fill in the login details to your server and it will list all the pages in the right hand side column. Download the www or public_html folder to your hard disk column to the left. You can drag the folder too. It will automatically download all the files from the server to your PC.
