Question

Webpage randomly getting blocked

Jul 20, 2017 9:12AM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm having a weird problem. My router(or my phone probably) is randomly blocking a website/network.
This - support.discordapp.com
Originally I noticed when I was using the Discord app in my Android phone, none of the server pictures or profile pictures were loading. After doing some research, I came to know that this problem isn't new. Some antivirus like Malwarebytes is blocking cdn.discord which results in the pictures not being displayed.
I tried visiting their support page but it didn't load as well. (everything else is fine)
When I turned my Wi-Fi off and switched to Cellular Data, everything was perfectly fine.

I'd like to add that not long ago, I had flashed a custom ROM on my phone and nothing like this ever happened while using that ROM, but now when I switched back to my original ROM (MIUI), this started to happen. So this might be problem with IP or MAC or DNS address as well.

Please help.

-Thank You.

Thank you answering but I'm not really sure if it's the ISP. As it loaded perfectly when I had another custom ROM installed.

Since you can change the DNS and MAC.

What have you done to test that idea?
Also, why futz with ROMS? Use what works.

Re: Web Page Randomly Getting Blocked

Since the Android's custom ROM you flashed on your phone works well while accessing, cdn.discord and support.discordapp.com, while using Cellular Data and when you switched back to using the original ROM, the web pages you mentioned look like they are being randomly blocked by the Wifi connection to your router. As you stated, the 2 web pages began to be randomly blocked upon trying to access them via Wifi after the switch back to the original ROM.

Cause of problem likely is the custom ROM altering the Android's network settings or security settings.
This is limited to your custom Android ROM and the original ROM works as it should when connecting to the Wifi network and the Cellular network. General access is present to the Internet. Wifi access has some access, too. This is for connectivity, not, the blocked web pages.

Given this, the Android's network settings including the IP address, DNS server and security settings should be looked at on both the Android and the router. On your Android, you would want to verify the IP address of the DNS server and security settings. On your router, security settings should be correct and the DNS server's IP address should be correct, too. Most likely, the settings for networking need to be modified on the custom ROM. It may have altered the Android's security settings. This would entail getting a new ROM since no editing can be done on it. However, on the router, make sure that the MAC address of the new custom ROM is not on a Blocked list, or the mentioned web page addresses are not listed as Blocked for any device. Likely, the issue lies in the area of Security. However, your Android's could be restored to the way they were prior to using the connection to the Internet via Wifi. Connectivity via Wifi should be restored to your Android.
