Where the camera comes in on video messaging is its ability to display accurate images in different lighting conditions, and of course its overall video quality. If your camera starts off grainy or displaying a large amount of digital noise, it's likely the video messaging quality won't be as pretty. However, with the Logitech and Creative Web cams I've looked at lately all give good low-light performance and are capable of displaying accurate colors and smooth moving images, which intern makes for quality Video IM conversations.
However, when using video IM clients, it's important to note that your quality depends more on your bandwidth and the IM client. I've seen the best video messaging with MSN, it's smooth and clear, and you have the ability to view full screen. Yahoo's video IM capabilities are so-so. If you can use their "super" option, the video can be good and smooth, but in the majority of my experience with Yahoo's video IM, the super button has been grayed out the image was very, very choppy and grainy images. AIM's video integration is fairly smooth, but the video windows are small.
However, all three of these major IM clients upgrade their serves on a fairly regular basis, so keep an eye out for improving video messaging.
I'm in the market for a new webcam. I primarily chat with Yahoo Messanger and was wondering what the best webcam would be. Any suggestions?
