There are web cams that connect directly to ethernet that do that but most folk would not want that. Get a regular web cam and on today's PCs the overhead of the web cam is quite small. However what we do with the video will determine the final load. It has little to do with the web cam itself.

About a year ago I heard a TV review about a webcam that has its own controller/processor (I think that's the correct terminology) such that it works faster without depending on the computer's CPU as much. I am interested in purchasing my first webcam.
