Webcam Crashing Computer

Mar 26, 2010 1:16PM PDT

Hello,
I have recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. I bought a Dell Inspiron 1440 laptop in which I have FastAccess facial login which works fine and can login, however I can't use the webcam with skype, msn or yahoo. With msn i get an error 'another programme is using the webcam' with yahoo i get a green screen. when i disable the fastaccess temporarily the camera works for a second, then the pc crashes - blue screen something like driver_not_less_than_or_equal comes up as the error. When I check with the Windows driver update, it says the drivers are up to date. The camera is 1.3MP Integrated Webcam - works for the facial login - so the camera itself doesnt seem to be the issue. I have done virus checks, but nothing showing up. Any ideas?
Thank You
Jack

Have you checked

Have you checked Dell's site for driver updates? Incidentally, many-a people have learned the hard way not to use the driver update function in Windows. Just tossing that out there in case you want to learn from someone ELSE'S mistake. In the future, start your search at Dell's website and then work your way out from there. Leave the Windows driver update function as a last resort for when you're truly desperate, and it's worth the gamble of your entire system being wiped out.

Tried that but no joy

The drivers don't seem to be installing correctly however... every time I log on I get the Windows message saying something is trying to update the webcam programme, and allowing access...allow but no affect - tried the yahoo IM webcam again and crashed once more..

sorry its the "user account control" that is trying to update the programme. Incidentally no idea if related or not but having trouble installing other apps/programs too, eg I purchased a game download from the EA website last night that wont run, and I get the same user account control message that it is trying to make changes to a programme when I try and open it. Have emailed ea support for help with that, but possibly related..... ??
