Question

Web Speed checks

Jul 25, 2016 11:40AM PDT

I have tried CNet's speed checker on two occasions. In each case it reported a download speed of about 3Mbps. Since even web pages with heavy picture content download on a second or two I do not believe this. Two other speed checkers report download speeds between 51 and 54Mbps with upload at 8.4Mbps. Why is CNet so different? I live near London, England.

Capability of speed testers
Jul 26, 2016 12:07AM PDT

It seems the speed tester promoted in the emails I get from CNet are suitable only for USA local use. I have just tried the speed test by PC Matic this offers four sources. A test using the source in California still shows a speed of 51Mbps. I am inclined to believe this since pages from New York Times with very big pictures download instantly.
