web page novice - HELP!

Sep 23, 2005 8:56AM PDT

i'm trying to create my first webpage.

I'm using dreamweaver and have configured the FTP settings ... the webpage uploads fine.. i.e if i got ftp.mywebsite.com i can see the html files... but when i type the URL of my webpage in my browser nothing comes up.. i just get an error message saying there is nothing there.

How do I link my url www.?mywebsite?.com to my the html file? How does the url know which .html to open?

I'm totally flumuxed as to what i'm doing wrong! I don't like being a novice! I'm normally fairly competent! Please help.

Tom, it sounds like you are on the right track. However, it can happen (I do it sometimes myself) that you may have not named the file correctly. This can happen even if the file extension is correct (i.e., html, htm, shtml, dhtml, mhtml, etc.). The way the web works is (like all other things) on an indexing system.

You may want to confirm that your home page is named something like this:

index.html

Therefore, your FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) or the URL will be:

www.mywebspace.com/index.html

This index page is like a book mark or a "Start Here" sign on the web. Try that and if it doesn't work, get back with me.

Hi thanks for your help! it was really clear..

I've still had no joy though and can't figure out why!

if i check my ftp :

ftp://ftp. mysite.com/

I have a folder called logs, my index.html and another random html file i've created.

However even if I type

www.mysite.com/index.html

It still comes up with ''this page cannot be found'' etc.

I am totally stumped!

Many Thanks,

Tom

Registration of domain naqme
Oct 4, 2005 6:48AM PDT

How long ago did you register your domain name and did you point it to the right site? There should be help files with yoru web host on how to point them to their computers. Also a domain name takes a few days to become activated after registration.

check list for you,

ck make sure nameservers are pointing to the right place.

make sure files are uploaded in public.html file if you have one on the server and then be sure to delete current index.html page they have set as default.

Call your host and ask someone to help.
