Underlying problem

AOL probably is having a problem because IE is having a problem.

Do all the spyware cleanup.

Get Mozilla Firefox
http://www.mozilla.org
Use this as a browser, even after IE is fixed.

Download iesetup.exe from Microsoft
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en
Next I would download the full IE6 package
http://www.petri.co.il/download_the_full_ie_package.htm

You can get ieradicator from here:
http://www.litepc.com/ier_lic.html
Accept the license and the next page is the download.

This will strip IE from a Win98 machine.
After removal you can re-install IE.

If you put Firefox on first, you will still have a browser while you are fixing IE.

Note: If you already have IE6, try this first, go to Add/Remove Programs and select IE to remove it, a window will come up and REPAIR is an option instaed of remove. Try doing the repair first, sometimes it works.

A. I have aol 8.0. I am having difficulty with random web pages disappearing as soon as they come up.

Since AOL is an entity all it's own, what do their support personel say about this kind of problem?

B. if i try and access thru internet explorer and error message comes up for explorer and says it has performed an illegal operation.

1. As stated, doesn't give any clues as to what the problem could be.

2. In order for us to analyze a potential problem and offer tips, we must rely only on the question content to attempt a qualifying response. A question should state the exact system error(s) - spelled, spaced, and capitalized just as it is shown on the display. Helpful perhaps is the window title in the colored bar of the report and any information when provided by a ''Details'' section also.

3. Most error messages:

? usually list and describe standard default error messages - written within the program code and generally recognized by most ''Gurus''

==and==

? the troubleshooting techniques may be published and explained in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (MSKB) library for the Windows operating systems, and may be searched for with accurately reported information.

4. Correct and complete information is vital if informative help and answers are what you seek. You want that Guru who reads your plea to understand the question, to possibly know the answer, and to reply giving you their assistance.

P.S.: Please note that just above the text editor (where you enter a question on the forum) is the following paragraph in RED, and if certain information is not present in your question, our reply may not be very helpful:

Note: If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem.

Note also: You have the option of using the hyperlink ''Edit My Profile'' on the right side of the main page to fill in applicable system information so that it is available.

things disappear because...

Windows Explorer, not I.E., shutsdown and restarts, shutting down the offending application and losing the system tray icons, but the stuff is still running in the background! ctrl-alt-del will show that.
