Welcome to the New CNET forums!

by Lee Koo (ADMIN) CNET staff/forum admin / May 20, 2015 4:48 PM PDT

Hello CNET members and forum readers!

Welcome everyone to the new forums platform. I am excited to announce that the CNET forums have now finally been fully migrated to our new forum platform! Woo hoo!! (Lee is doing the happy dance!) Grin

With this platform change, we have also put on a fresh coat of paint. As you may have noticed here, the forum’s design is finally and I mean FINALLY inline with CNET’s current site design! In the new design we have streamlined and simplified things a bit--allowing it to be brighter and made the text larger for the ease of reading. As for functionality, we have relatively kept things the same except for a few minor things (you can read about them in the Forum FAQ). Note that the main goal of this forum project was to move to a newer platform and bring the design up-to-date, and it was NOT a project to enhance or add forum features. Feature enhancement will come in the future. Happy

So without further ado, I invite you all to go to the Test forum and give the new forum platform a test run. Bang on it, create new discussions, and post to your hearts content! We want you to try it out and get familiar with it. (NOTE: The Test forum is for testing purposes only, so please don’t post anything of importance--as the forum name suggests, it’s a “test” forum.)

Just for fun, here are a couple of discussions to get you started:

-- What is your favorite type of pizza?
-- What's in your pockets or purse for EDC (everyday carry)?

If you have any questions, or would like to report something that is broken (functionality, cosmetic quirkiness, etc.), or have any feedback for us, please let us know about it by posting it here in this discussion thread.

My team has worked extremely hard on this project and we really hope you enjoy it and like love it! Grin

Thank you for your time and your feedback!

Sincerely,

-Lee Koo

Too big a font.
by Kees_B Forum moderator / May 22, 2015 1:07 AM PDT

The font is so much bigger than the old forums, that I'm zooming out one or two ticks with the mouse to feel comfortable on a normal 4:3 monitor. Might be different on a 4" phone, however. Isn't this a 'responsive' site, adapting itself to the screen size? That's a missed chance, with so many people going mobile.

PS. Where's the visual editor? I couldn't add a smiley ...

In reply to: Too big a font.

The font size is CNET.com standard font size.

The new forums are currently not mobile adaptive. However, it is one of the next tasks on our list of "To dos" You are absolutely right many people are already on mobile and.or shifting towards mobile usage. Again this is definitely a high priority for us.

As for the visual editor, another thing on our "to do list", but this implementation is not trivial and will take up some time. For the time being, for emoticons or text edits for bold, italic, etc... you can use these here:
BBS codes:
http://www.cnet.com/forums/faq/#bbs

and for emoticons: Happy
http://www.cnet.com/forums/faq/#emoticon

Thanks for the feedback!
Cheers,
-Lee

That seem to work. Thank you. But quoting doesn't seem to be on the list of BBS codes.
Unless I'm too tired to see it and just missed it?

I know I've been posting lots of rubbish to the new fora this morning, sorry for that but I'm playing with it.

I did a colon-curved bracket and that added a smiley for me. I never thought to look for the VE because I'm so used to typing Happy manually.
But you're right, I don't see it.

Seems too white for a backgrd.
by Willy / May 28, 2015 9:44 AM PDT

Maybe as someone already posted this maybe geared for mobile appearances. I find the white backgrd. too stark compared to the older format. On a laptop(or larger display) its very noticable, on my netbook not so bad, IMHO.

Otherwise, I find doing anything to improve or update the forums is welcomed, just don't go bonkers in the process.

Thanks for the feedback Willy!

The design of the new Forums is to match CNET.com's overall site design. So if you look at some CNET pages for example:
http://www.cnet.com/news/windows-10-may-be-released-to-manufacturers-in-july/
http://www.cnet.com/news/amazon-prime-now-with-free-same-day-deliveries/
http://www.cnet.com/products/samsung-galaxy-tab-a/

The new forums are just following the current look and feel of CNET which is greatly needed because the old forums are 4-5 designs behind and we are now just catching up finally.

Thanks again Willy for your feedback!

C|net, The Best New Format
by kileyk82 / June 1, 2015 3:06 AM PDT

I love it. Especially the larger fonts. It makes reading and leaving a reply so much better. I will most certainly be on cnet a lot more now in looking for answers and leaving posts and for an all around knowledge base. Thanks for the best pages I have seen on most forums. For us older folks out here, its a real eye opener, no pun intended. I would be curious how other members of this site feel about the new pages. Thanks Guys and Girls.

Samsung forum search
by cww2616 / June 4, 2015 3:07 PM PDT

I want to search the Samsung forum for items related to USB drive on smart TV but there is NO search option. Do I have to look through every post to find one about USB? Seems like a BIG error in design.

The samsung forum has not been migrated to the new platform yet. When it has been migrated, you will be able to search it for any given term.

They can still use the old forum search for Samsung terms.

look at the top of the page to the right of the CNET logo. You should see a "Search Forums" box. Enter your search terms there, and you should get some results. Samsung forum is still in the old forums platform and will be migrated sometime next week. But search should work as I described to you.

Good luck!

Functioning "see all comments" button required
by DAS1951 / June 7, 2015 6:17 AM PDT

Hi
New UI ok but we need a working "See all comments" or "See whole thread" button. Does not work now when getting to a conversation via emailed link.

I posted this point in your feedback window as well just now.
Thanks.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
