We need a digital camera with very little shutter lag!

My wife and I want a new digital camera. The one we have is not fast enough for our two grandchildren. We want a camera that runs on AA rechargeable batteries, has an SD card, and an optical zoom of at least 8X with image stability. The smaller the better. Is there such a camera out there with an almost immediate picture capture? These two kids move way too fast!

Digital Camera - low shutter lag.

In reply to: We need a digital camera with very little shutter lag!

Most longer zoom camera have a shutter lag of about 0.5 seconds.

Which is probably a bit too long for your purpose.

And there are no cameras with 8X zoom and image stabilization.

I did find one camera with a shutter lag of 0.2 second and it has an optical zoom of 12X. It does have image stabilization.

I'll take a look at that one. The one I'm interested in right now is the Canon Powershot S2 IS. It's last year's model, and at a good price. The new model is the S3 IS. There is very little difference. Do you think it would be a good choice for us?

Canon S2 IS

In reply to: Thanks!

The Canon S2 IS and S3 IS are pretty much alike.
The S3 has one more megapixel and a very slightly larger LCD.
The S3 has a shutter lag of 0.5 second
The S2 has a shutter lag of 0.8 second

Both camera take excellent photos.

If you are looking at the S2, I suggest you also look at the Sony H2.
It and the S2/S3 are rated equal by reviewers and owners.
The Sony H2 has a shutter lag of 0.3 seconds.

Here is a look at their specifications:

There is a green link right under the photo of the camera.
That link will take you to a full review of each camera.
