WD My Book not recognized at start up

Jul 11, 2007 9:54AM PDT

Hi,
I am in dire need of fast answers, my main hdd is about to crash (very noisy) I am trying to back up using norton ghost 2003 boot disk, on an amd 2G processor (x86 Family 15 model 12 stepping 0 ~2009Mhz.)
Bios megatrends inc 1004.005, 11/26/2004
with Winxp pro.

Problem is the WD "My book" Premium (500 gig) is not recognized as an available drive when I boot with ghost.

Is this a bios setting?
I would really appreciate any quick advise on how to fix ASAP.
My whole business is on the failing hdd
Thanks
Scott

Have You Formatted the "My Book" Yet?

If not, try doing so from the XP "Disk Management" section in the "Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management".

Hope this helps.

Didn't format drive
Jul 12, 2007 5:39AM PDT

I don't think I formatted the drive when I got it.
I have been using it for 6 months, and it has gigs of data, so don't want to format now.

I just haven't used it with Ghost.

Thanks

In addition to wondering about formatting ...

Is the Ghost Boot Disk configured to recognize USB (did you choose the option for USB support)? Ghost 2003 boot disk maker will make floppies that allow you to access a usb harddrive or usb device.

If you did make the proper boot diskettes and still aren't getting the USB recognized, the following link might step you through to a solution - let us know what you were doing wrong.

PS - the Norton Ghost Tutorials ...

installed with Norton Ghost have a tutorial titled "How to Create and Restore an Image using a USB or Firewire Device". Have you taken advantage of it?

I will check that out

I think I made the disk for USb support, but it was long ago.
I have since uninstalled all norton products and just kept ghost boot disk. I will have to dig around and find the software and reinstall.

I will look at tutorial at the same time.
If this drive holds up another day or 2, I will have a new internal to back up to with Ghost

Thanks for all the suggestions
