Ways of downloading files

Mar 15, 2004 5:57PM PST

I am running Win XP Pro SP1.

My friend would like to send me some files, totaling about 10 MB. My question is, what are the ways of downloading the files, beside sending them as e-mail attachments and ICQ ? Is it possible to set up a direct link to the other computer to directly downkload the files? How ? I am on DSL. Thanks.

Nothing wrong with e-mail via DSL for 10 Mb, unless his or yours ISP severely limits the size of the mailbox.

Alternatives include:
- let him burn a CD or DVD
- put the computers next to each other, and use a direct cable connection (use a cross cable between the two nics) - a 10 mile glass fiber will in principle work also, of course, so 'next to' is negotiable
- let him put the files on his home page on the net, then you can download them
- WiFi (a kind of wireless dsl)
- zip-drive with zip-disks
- usb key (up to 128 Mb in a cigarette lighter size device)
- mount his hard disk in your computer as slave

Hope this helps.

I give the nod to ICQ for this one.

For me, I'm a bit overboard on the security aspects, so when I leave files for pickup, a linux box with secureftp (OpenSSH to be exact) is left online.

Clients and servers and more detail at http://www.openssh.org

Only one port needs to be open and it's a secure one...
