Almost without notice by the network news opinion spinners the situation in the 4 Moslem provinces of southern Thailand is getting more serious.

On 28 April hundreds of insurgents, mostly armed with knives, machetes, and shotguns attacked police stations throughout those four provinces. More than 100 insurgents were reported killed. The police had all the firepower, and they appear to have been informed before the attacks began that the attacks were coming.

According to reports during the attacks the insurgents used loud hailers calling on the local population to rise up in a "Jihad" against the Thai authorities.

Traditionally the Thai Muslim community in these provinces has been against radical Islamic doctrine. However a seperatist campaign, funded then by Libyan money did occur in the 70's and 80's.

Apparently calls are being made by more radical Islamic leaders in these provinces once again for a seperate "Islamic" nation. No one is really sure who is behind the latest calls for Jihad, but the radical moslem groups from Malaysia and Indonesia are the best suspects. However, there is surely a "home-grown" element in this. The Muslim population is dissatisfied with the Thai authorities treatment of the Muslem majority.

We will have to wait and see what happens, but this situation can get very serious if the population starts to listen to the radicals and join the "Jihad".

So far, here in the US, we have changed school dress codes to allow the wearing of head scarves, and have watched as mosques have been built and loud speakers installed on the outside to announce the calls to prayers.

What's next, where, and when ?

Hi, Del.

Please explain to me how the second part of your message doesn't essentially say "all Muslims are the same?" That's the only interpretation I can derive from the juxtaposition of the two parts of your message.

Interpret as you wish...........
May 2, 2004 9:29AM PDT

It has been my personal experience, and from what I read,
that muslims don't adapt to existing environments, they
expect that environment to adapt to them. And when the
environment doesn't adapt without question, legal action
ensues. And once they have permeated the area with
sufficient numbers, they impose demands upon all who were
there before.

They must earn my trust and confidence, and I'll give them
ample opportunity, but I'll not surrender my culture to
that of Islam.

You don't mind that they have different ways of living, but you don't want to be subject to the religious dictates of a faith you don't believe in.

That's a policy I can get behind 100%!

I can remember attending school alongside boys who were wearing yarmulkes. Nobody seemed bothered by it or felt that they were being asked to surrender their culture to anyone. Cultural diversity is one of the things that makes this country great.
