Question

watch home dvr remotely with smartphone

May 1, 2015 3:16AM PDT

I want to travel out of town and then watch a program that is recorded on my home dvr using my computer or smartphone. I have heard that slingbox has hardware and software that can do this. Has any forum member done this. Your advice please.

Answer
Maybe, maybe not.

As you look at slingbox closely you see that it's input is component video.

Crunching sound. Component video was "sunsetted" in 2010 so very few DVRs have that output so crunch.

Sounds like details matter.

It looks like my dvr has component output so is that what I would input to the slingbox?

Also I don't understand your comment " Crunching sound. Component video was "sunsetted" in 2010 so very few DVRs have that output so crunch."

could you please explain that to me?

I can't guess what DVR you have. The crunch sound is my attempt to write how the industry is crushing attempts and tech like this.

If your DVR has component that's one huge hurdle out of the way. Now all you need is how to control it all. Many folk blow apart at that step.

Thanks Bob. I just wish there was a forum member who has done this so I could talk to them before I buy anything.

There are forums about slinging.

Remember that I don't read what exact models are at play so I can't comment if it should work. I noted the usual item and that's out of the way but I get the feeling you want a manual or step by step for the entire system. I'm sure you're seeing this isn't always out there as folk cobble this and the sling or that other thing with a sling.
