Warning: Palm system crash alert

Jan 8, 2006 7:22AM PST

I am a long-time Palm user. I recently noticed that nearly all of the data in my Palm desktop datebook was gone. Long story short - after over an hour on the phone with Palm tech support, I learned that once there are approximately 10,000 entries into any of the four main Palm functions (datebook, addresses, memo pad, to do list), the file becomes corrupted, and the data will be erased.

To put it mildly, I was shocked. Not only did I lose a significant amount of data, but it appears that I will not be able to use my PDA as previously. There is a major software flaw that prevents the addition of any more data.

Has anyone ever had this problem, or heard of it before? I can not believe that Palm has not warned users about this problem.

A New "Old" IPAQ
Feb 1, 2007 10:09PM PST

The HP iPAQ hx2495 Pocket PC is by far the most versitile out there for the price. It even has Bluetooth and WiFi as well as both an SD and CF slot to allow for almost limitless memory (with SD and CF so cheap go for at least 1 gig each) both cards will run simultaneously.

The included backup utility is excellent and battery life is very good as well. I recommend a hard Rhino case or equivalent and screen protectors be used. The Axium is overpriced and too ala carte for practicality.

I've had really good luck with refurbished units. My IPAQ 2215 has been a dream. I plan to replace it with the unit I mentioned (saving my pennies). I'm not unhappy with my 2215, it's just getting long in the tooth.

Jumping from leaky ship to another leaky ship.

You may not be surprised that the other major PDA suffers such loses as well.

-> I'm not only a long time Palm owner but write software for it as well. Since backup of the C:\Palm directory seems simple, I've never lost much if anything to talk about.

However there are replacement programs such as DATEBOOK 4, 5 and such that have more database entries.

good points
Jan 9, 2006 2:55AM PST

I agree backup is easy - my concern is that what is the point of backing up if the datebook (or contacts or memos, etc) become corrupted when full? I was not aware of the problem until it was too late.

Re Datebook 4 or 5, the Palm tech support person had no such advice for me. Do those programs allow for more data entry? If so, how much? or is that even known at this point?

Maybe I am too disappointed in this experience to stay with Palm. It seems like a pretty basic software problem that they did not solve or support.

Just remember what you wrote.

"It seems like a pretty basic software problem that they did not solve or support."

My bet is that line will come handy with most products when we look close enough. However the mileage I got from my old IIIc was over 4 years. Now I have this T|X and it's very nice.

As to Datebook, I'm not it's author or support but note that it's an alternative. It's author is on the same mailing lists as I am.
