General discussion

wanted info to install win office 97 on xp

May 26, 2006 5:11PM PDT

I have a new dell xp sp2 that came with oem corel word perfect 12. my old dell win95 came with the oem win small business 97.
I really only need a good word processor, for a few letters, etc. I would like to dump the 300mb corel.

my old dell, the good old days, came with all oem cd's. xp is asking for authorized cert# for office 97. it must be somewhere. now to questions:
is there a way to find cert# with only the cd?
is it worth doing? installing 97 on xp.
does 'open office' or another freeware have a stand alone word processor?

thanks.

First, let me note I wouldn't go the Office 97 route:
1.) The OEM version may be locked to the OEM copy of Windows, which, in turn, to the OEM hardware. Have a look at the EULA and see if you're permitted to install it on a different computer...might save you the trouble.
2.) While you can technically use Office 97 on Windows XP, about half those I've spoken with had misc problems throughout their usage of it, usually consisting of seemingly random error messages and road blocks.

OpenOffice only gives you the entire suite, and though it's a third of the size of Word Perfect, the 100MB is likely still more than you want for simple word processing.

My only suggestion for a freeware word processor is AbiWord, which is compatible with the basic document formats. Although it's not as advanced as Microsoft Office or OpenOffice, it should be able to get the job done well, especially for a 5MB program.

Hope this helps,
John

thanks to both replies

I will go to both links and check them out. I thought win 97 might be a conflict. 100mb is still better. Unfortunately I am using dial-up. I will post back with results.

Just so you know what I find fails.

Office 97 is not entirely compatible with XP. Common complaints are about the spell checker failing. No firm cure is known. Another one is Word opening the document twice. If you set the compatibility to Windows 95/98 it seems to fix it. However other nutty problems tend to be reported.

I use Open Office which you can ask a friend on a fast link to fetch for you.

do you have any opinions on

john's suggestion?. abiword?
I have decided to forget the win97 option. the fast fetch would work. I really only need word processor. reviews at cnet downloads are mixed with abiword. more pros than cons.

I did download belarc and if I ran it on my win 95, shich is retired to the basement, the oem registration would be found. it did show all info on my dell xp oem licenses. It seems like a good tool.

I will install the abiword 2.4.4 I downloaded today. I will use it in sym 'safe try' mode. but if you have an opinion on abiword, I'll take it.
thanks.

Sorry.

At office and home we have too many Open Office installs that work to go and try something else. I'm sure it's good but I like to repeat success.
