Want to upgrade ram, any suggestions?

Aug 29, 2004 3:16AM PDT

I have two sticks of 256mb in my computer right now but i have no idea what kind it is. I know its a 184pin DDR, but not sure of what brand or anything cause it came with my old gateway. I built my own system now but kept some of the parts from the gateway. Anyways what kind of ram should i get? I was gonna go with 1 Mushkin 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 for $74 from newegg. Here are my system specs

Athlon XP 3000+ 2.16ghz
2 256mb ram sticks
ASUS A7N8X mother board

What operating system are you

using. Win 9X doesn't handle more than 512 MB very well.

PC 3200 is DDR 400, [200 MHz at double data rate = 400].

That happens to be a good price for CL 3 DDR 400.

Not sure what you mean by "upgrading" The DDR 3200 won't run any faster than the mobo, your present memory and the CPU supports.

Which CPU do you have? There are AMD 3000's that only support 333MHz there are also some that will support 400 MHz.

BTW I bought 2 sticks of that from newegg also to use with a 333 MHz Barton. Simply a good price, and I like Mushkin, although they are not the better and much more expensive Mushkins.

Just looked at the Asus site.

That mobo supports 400 MHz FSB in the later versions. Earlier versions require a later BIOS upgrade.
