Want to make me watch commercials? - Its easy!

May 23, 2006 11:51AM PDT

With all the arguements and discussions about the end of advertising models as we know it I thought about the ads I skip, and the ones I hunted down, Yes I actually went looking for the Advert.

Start with Apple, The "I'm a Mac" Advert is downloaded on my desktop and I run them quite often, They are funny. We had some humerous ones in the last election that I downloaded when I heard about them, Then there were some Satchi and Satchi adverts and also I recsall some Telecom Adverts. These were funny and clever and I really enjoyed them, and how can I forget the Dancing Car.

Then put them all into a trailer farm (have you ever downloaded a trailer .. Its an Advert) type of thing and have them in a sort of yellow pages directory.

Now all I have to do is look for a laptop, or a Dog bowl, Find a supplier and then have the option to see the advert if I'm interested.

And if I'm looking ... sure I want to see your advert.

Also for the advertiser .. If I watch it, I'm interested in your product so I am qualified, and just who you are targeting.

And if your a crative funny person, You can make adverts that people want to see and make a fortune designing adverts for the companies that get it.

Just Please ... If I'm in NZ don't show me US suppliers, WE DON'T HAVE A LOCAL BEST BUY HERE

OK I would look but would you ???

Have you downloaded an Ad ???

It's not that simple

Well I work with marketing (actually I don't have a job since I quit my last one, but I'm still on this businness) and I agree with what you're saying...

BUT!!! And that's a big but, sometimes it's hard or even wierd to create such creatives ads... There are some companys that want to advertise some stuff that has to be direct and in a boring way...

Like a supermarket that has a big sale going on, they can make a totally creative ad, but sometimes they don't even have time to it. That's because a lot of companys (most of them retails) decide to put a ad in the air one day before it.

They have the spot in a TV show bought but they change the ad one day before it goes in the air (that happens quite offen in Brazil with retails, and just to make sure everyone knows this Brazil, USA and UK are the biggest ad countrys in the world), so that don't give them time to create those beautiful ads that we'll love...

Once again I agree with that, good ads will always make people want to watch them, and download them... But not every ad can be that good, some ads will always be boring and informative only.

What was that product?

When I studied marketing in college, my prof stated that people have problems remembering the product name when the ad is too humerous or creative. All those bells & whistles and jokes make for an entertaining commercial but the dividends for the client are less than they should be.

True

That's true... And sometimes you see a totally creative commercial of Sony, but you can't remmember that's a Sony commercial, and it could be Toshiba, Philips, whatever.

Better word - Relevence

The current advert model is scattergun. That is fire wildy and hope something gets hit, Sort of like a western movie.

The best advert model is targeting.

As I said at the begining, I don't watch ads that dont catch my interest, I saw a dell ad come on last night and immediately walked off to get a coffee. I am not looking for a laptop, Toyota offered me finance on a new Car, I'm not in the market.

But I went into a mac website and watched every add and review on the macbook (My ibook is dying)

Its a new age. Scattergun is a waste, Its time for precsion targeting of those looking for specific products.

Ad Comoanies and Retailes need to understand interactivity and learn to harness it.

More than clever, its relevence.

Ad's on TV are scattergun, ad's in a yellowpages are targeted.

Funny you say that.

I recall some University students doing an advert for Dishwashing liquid, It just oozed sex and Tanned Bodies (it was a while ago, and tanned was still in)

They coulddn't believe it when they got an F

Men are not the ones who tend to buy diswashing detergent.

In short

Know your Customer, and appeal to them.

You're all correct.

Relevance is important. Some gimmick that will catch your attention is important. And making sure the product or company name is remembered is important.

When I was in college, we were told kids, food and cute animals (or maybe just animals in general) were big attention getters.

I specifically went to the Mountain Dew website to see ads that I'd already seen on TV. I wanted to watch them again. If you can figure out a way to do that, you've done a good thing, I would think.

Would the perfect ad then be...

Make Commercials Appealing
May 28, 2006 1:14PM PDT

Its really not that hard. About 50% of people(including me) watch the superbowl just to see the commercials. That can be implemented into everyday TV. If you make commercials hilarious, people will watch them. Get to it, Ad Council.
