Want to change over to virtual server

Aug 16, 2009 12:51AM PDT

Our small firm let our office lease expire. I moved all of the IT equipment into our basement, which works quite well. I have: a)Win2003 Server acting as a terminal server; b) Win2000 Server acting as a file server; 3) a Dell workstation to use as a remote desktop after accessing via the terminal server; 4) a managed switch; 5) a couple of UPS boxes. All of this runs merrily in my basement - right next to the hot water heater.

For reasons of security, reliabiilty, expanability, maintenance, risk and potentially cost, I would like to shut down that hardware and move the file to a remote, virtual service. 2 people access the files from my home. 1 person accesses from another state. I also have to access the files when on vacation, traveling, etc.

What I would like to find is something that acts just like a virtual drive in every appreciable way. I've tried Nomadesk. If was pretty cool to play with, but lacks at least one key feature. When I access a file, it doesn't prevent someone else on the team from accessing the same file. This is a critical need as if I'm updating a spreadsheet I would want anyone else trying to access the file to get something like "file is locked for editing, do you want a read only copy?"

Can anyone out there recommend a service provider that can supply this easily and cheaply - something like a nomadesk? I know there are expensive solutions like grabbing rack space at a NOC and moving my boxes there, but that is crazy expensive. I'd just keep it all in the basement first.

Any insight greatly appreciated.

thanks

don't need web hosting

thanks for the recommendation. i really don't need web hosting. it's file sharing that I'm after. i would like the feel/behavior of a local file server (mapped drive) when in actuality the mapped drive is remote. same file locking as if local, etc. so far it looks like filesanywhere.com is the closest. my only issue with them is that it doesn't look like i would be able to get my quickbooks application to work with their system. i'm going to trial it and see how it goes.

thx

Hi, did you ever get an answer to this ? It sounds like you want to do the same thing I want to do, I don't seem to be able to find a provider who isn't trying to sell me web hosting - and that's not what I want.
(Actually, not quite. I did find one company, but it was very expensive).
Would be interested to know how you got on.
Thanks
