Want a new camera, which one, which one...???

Jan 26, 2010 11:40PM PST

OK Folks. I am in the market for a new digital camera and have it down to 3 cameras. They are all fairly similar in features. I hope that someone here has had the opportunity to use one or two of these and can give some more detailed feedback and personal impression of each. I guess it comes down to this: I am going to buy one of these cameras. I need your assistance to figure out which...

Canon Powershot SX20 IS
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35
Nikon Coolpix P90

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you

In the same situation
Jan 27, 2010 4:05AM PST

Hi there, I am in the same situation, trying to decide on those cameras as well. I actually bought the Canon and was returned it the next day, I was not happy with it. Picture quality was not good and it was slow.

I hope someone replies soon as I want to buy a camera any day now.

Partial to Pentax
Jan 29, 2010 9:30PM PST

You will have to decide first on either a fixed lens or SLR lens body. Here, I am partial to the Pentax models even though they do not appear to be as popular as the Canon and others. I have had Pentax film SLR's (Single Lens Reflex) in my youth and still have the selection of lenses that I choose years ago and can still use them! There is also a wealth of older, excellent lenses inexpensively available. Anti-shake features are necessary when using any type of Tele Lenses and handy even for standard type lenses. The Pentax has this feature built-into the body, where most others have it in the lenses and are restricted and also more expensive. Having a budget to adhere to I am not looking for the (top) K7 model with video cababilites, but have my eye on the K20D at about $800 (body only) and apply the saved money toward more lenses and extra battery and external flash. I contacted Pentax and got the following answer regarding the usability of teir older lenses:
"All older Pentax lenses mount on current Pentax camera bodies. However, there are some lenses that require an adaptor. These are called "screw mount" lenses and have not been available for some time. For customers with a ?screw mount? lens, you must purchase a "Mount Adaptor B" in order to make the lens compatible. This mount is item PTX 30120, Mount Adapter B (35mm Screwmount to Bayonet) for $30.95 plus shipping and handling.

Some older lenses (M & K Series) do not give full functionality with the current bodies, but still mount on the camera.

Please note that the newer digital lenses (designated as DA or DA*) do not work on older film based cameras. They can be mounted on those cameras, but the corners of images may be dark.

For more comprehensive information concerning lens compatibility, we recommend that you access the following link and view pages 208-210 of the manual".

Pentax

I have decided that I do not want a SLR camera. For one, they are really expensive and I don't want to put that much money into a camera right now. I am actually leaning towards the
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 right now. I have also eliminated the Canon, although my last camera was a Canon and I loved it. The issue I am running into is that there are soooo many "good" digital cameras out there. I want a lot of features and a little more camera then your basic model, however, if you do a comparison with three cameras priced at $199.00, $299.00, and $399.00 they all have many features in common and are all highly rated. How the heck do you ever narrow it down to what you actually need and want?

I finally got the Panasonic DMC-FZ35
Feb 4, 2010 11:49PM PST

I bought the Canon SX20 IS and ended up taking it back - picture quality was not good. I used to have a Canon S5 IS and thought the SX20 would just be better - it wasn't.

The Nikon sounded good except the only reason I didn't go with it was because it does not zoom while you are video taping.

I have only had the Panasonic DMC-FZ35 for a few days so I can't make too many comments but so far it seems good.

Decided
Feb 5, 2010 8:22AM PST

Well, for what it's worth, I decided on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35. I have yet to read a bad review and it has all the features I could ever want or use. I like the looks and the size also.
Don't know if it's the right decision, but it's mine.

How do you like the Panasonic?
Feb 7, 2010 9:24AM PST

Just wondered if you have got the camera and tried it out. After using it for a few days I wasn't happy with the picture quality so returned it. I have no idea now what to get.
I look forward to hearing how you find it after taking pictures and viewing them on the computer.

Any regrets? Does the FZ-35 perform better than others ?
Oct 26, 2010 9:03PM PDT

After reading comments about the FZ35 and comparisons to other brands (similar features and price) I'm ready to order. Several places offer the FZ35 for around $300. online, but shipping could be delayed up to 2 weeks because that camera is no longer in abundant supply. So, does anyone have suggestions about which supplier to use? I'll wait if it's going to save me a bunch of money. Does anyone know of a retailer (brick and mortar store) that still offers this camera for sale?
