I too would like to know about the best compact MP3 RECORDERS out there. Very hard to research. But a compact unit with the ability to record (line or mic in) to uncompressed wav or to high quality MP3 (320kbs) using replaceable batteries is every musicians dream. Which is the best 1 GB unit for this purpose????
I'm looking to replace a RipFlash+ sometime in the near future (the 256MB version is what I have now). I'm finding that 256MB isn't enough capacity for many of the mp3 recordings I want to use (and the mp3 encoding quality on the RipFlash isn't nearly good enough for the bitrates used), and the player is starting to wear out. I'm getting more memory errors than I used to, and a couple buttons are broken or nearly so.
I would like:
at least 512MB or 1GB built-in memory (more would be nice, but I don't want it to be overly expensive, and considering how rough I am on players, something with a hard drive or microdrive would be lucky to last 10 seconds), with an expansion slot (I don't really care - CF would be preferred, but I'd be willing to go with another format like SD so long as it wasn't much more expensive per gigabyte than CF)
at least mp3, ogg, and maybe a few other formats of playback capability
direct encoding to mp3 (and ogg would be nice too) - independently selectable bitrates between 8 and 320kbps, and sample rates from 8 to 48 khz, via line-in or a built-in microphone (preferably decent quality and stereo, otherwise I'd use the microphone I'm using with the RipFlash+, and line-in)
good mp3 quality for encoding (similar to recent versions of the LAME codec.
Also it'd be nice to be able to change recording input volume on the line-in or the built-in mic (if it has one)
Also, I want to be able to upload and download files to and from the player and computer without any hurdles.
I definitely want it to use standard AA or AAA batteries.
I don't really care how big it is, so long as it fits in my pants pocket with some room to spare. I'd say an upper limit on size would be about the size of a compact CD walkman or a compact cassette walkman.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Some I have under consideration are the iRiver IFP-799 (or sibling(s), JetAudio G3, Muvo N200. However, I'm not sure that one of those has what I'm looking for (or close to it).
