Wait for Windows Vista?

Aug 20, 2005 1:13AM PDT

Okay, I might get a new computer soon, should I get a faster one now, or should I wait for Windows Vista designed computers? They will come out in 2007 sometime, I am guessing. I can wait that long. Should I? What has happened in the past when new operating systems have been released? Just wondering.

What are you waiting for?

What is in Vista that is worth waiting for?

"What has happened in the past when new operating systems have been released?"

That's a big question. The short short answer is you wait for drivers, patches for about a year as vendors get up to speed on the new OS. But Microsoft pretty much pushes the new OS out since you won't be able to buy XP preloaded on new machines soon after Vista launches.

Hear, hear. . .

I didn't go to XP for about three years (from W98SE), or whatever, just before SP1 was introduced. I think I got the first CD with SP1 on it.

I am not holding my breath for Vista. XP works. I have my two copies trained. I've read a lot about it lately in magazines and on the net and I'm just not impressed. Of course, I'm not a gamer, power user, video editor, or whatever.

I don't plan to change. Besides, I still have three machines running W98SE.

That way you know the hardware is compatable by then. Also there is the issue with hardware DRM.

Why wait

MS, has a nagging habit of dragging it feet for whatever reason to get a new OS out. Consider all the hype of "Longhorn" and its still not out. When Vista becomes available it maybe more of having it be a stripped down version of Longhorn just to get sopmething out and provide two OS products to cover the field sorta speak if and when Longhorn becomes available as well. This 2005, doy really want to wait till 2007? If you have a serious need for a new computer, get it now. It seems when Vista comes out, it may require only a new video card and more ram for a happy step-up to use it. It should also provide a testing pgm. to see what readiness you're current system needs stand for it usage.

Willy is corect. If M$ wants people to but the Vista thing (A Rose by any other name would still have thorns)
M$ will have to make it work on at least all of the PC sold in the last 3~4 years( P4 and AMD Athlons). What the finial version will be is anybodys guess since M$ keeps taking things out of it. John
