Other models, such as the various PDA phones running Windows Mobile, do have free apps to turn off the data so you can use local maps in combination w/ built in GPS radios & trusted GPS apps like Tom Tom or MS Live Search.
I'm going to buy a phone and I'm looking for one that has a GPS. I was looking at sony ericsson's W760a from AT&T. My problem is that I do not want to get a data plan and from what I can see I would need to connected to the internet every time I wanted to use the GPS. Is there a way to download maps to the phone and store is locally? I would prefer to get a memory stick and upload all the maps on to it (similar to how a standalone GPS).
