And how it works is on the web. I can't know if your RS485 protocol allows for loopback.
So no, typing may or may not show up. You're thinking of RS232 which this is not.
So, I am reverse-"engineering" a cable for a colleague, which is used to drive a motor in a measurement system under computer control. The effort has gone well so far, with all of the components located and assembled, and I would like to test it before it gets shipped overseas.
The cable assy consists of an FTDI USB-RS485 converter PCB, and some 4-conductor cable and terminating connector. I have been trying to set up a loopback check as a rudimentary basic test. I tried to use my XP-based computer with Hyperterminal, and I simply don't know enough yet about how this should be set up to test the device. I also have downloaded the W7 trial version of Hyperterminal PE to my W7 machine, and come across the same questions:
-What information needs to be in "host address" box?
-How do I determine what port number I should supply, and is this dependent on which USB port the converter is plugged into?
As I understand it, I should see evidence of connection when set up correctly, and then typing should show up in the Hyperterminal display screen. In any case, any help or guidance appreciated.
