W2000 Startup too many progs

Aug 24, 2007 2:44AM PDT

Startup takes ages. I need to get rid of a lot of programs that start up at the beginning, but the procedure that tells me to put 'msconfig' into the Run box just doesn't work on W2000. What other way can I do it?
Also, how do I know what must be kept and what can be dumped? Can I take off all those "hot key" thingamabobs, for instance? Is it correct that the programs will still be on the computer even if I put them off at Startup? Do I need to keep all the Microsoft updates too?
Please, someone, tell me what is essential to keep at Startup.
Thanks in advance.

Given you've run 2000 for over 5 years.

You could use the old fashioned ways to control startups.

But I found STARTUP CONTROL PANEL (see google.com) to help.

I use HIJACKTHIS as well.

As to whether it's needed, I can't answer this. It's your machine. If you don't use hotkeys then you only need to decide.

Thanks very much for prompt reply. At least I can see the names of progs that start up on Startup (even if I don't know what most of them are.)
I'll just have to play safe and ignore the unknown ones - leave them there, I mean.

Windows 2000 doesn't come with msconfig.

You can get msconfig from HERE.A word of caution, try avoiding disabling anything in msconfig. The best best bet is to use services which the link below shows.

Remove start unnecessary start up programs click HERE

"Do I need to keep all the Microsoft updates too?'

Its wise to keep everything updated included MS updates. When you sya to "keep all",would you have any particular ones in mind?

I use MBSA which details missing updates.I will only show updates for your computer, though you may not need them all.I install the security updates and the ones for certain programs,e.g.,if yo uhave windows media player.

Feel free to post back with any questions.
