W-7 reinstall

Feb 3, 2010 10:15AM PST

I just ordered a copy of W-7 Pro for my desk top. It is an OLD Abit AN8 Fatal1ty board. Yes I know the company is belly up! I would like to install W-7 for now and then this summer rebuild with a new mobo and cpu upgrade.

My question will there be a big hassel with activating the OS again?
I want to get rid of Vista and really like W-7 RC but it is about to expire so I figured it would be great to just update for now and run it until I rebuild the unit. My video and photo editing has picked up and am noticing my old AMD is just not up to the task anymore.

Thanks for the recommendations and help.....

Just make sure.

That the W-7 is a retail version. The OEM version has an onerous license that makes moving it almost impossible.

Well shoot that stinks.....guess I need to cancel my order with new egg or send it back when it gets here.

If possible can someone explain why the OEM version is so onerous?

Thanks....

2 reasons.

1. It locks to the hardware it installs on.

2. The license changed. Not to repeat what is currently a top post in this forum. But you can't buy OEM for personal use any longer.

A 'softie explained well enough. "OEM License lives and dies with the machine."

If you need the full license, get the retail version.

UPGRADE versions?
Feb 3, 2010 9:25PM PST

When I see this question I can't help but ask if they have any old Windows XP licenses that can be recycled for use with the retail upgrade versions. You can do a clean install with 64-bit 7 and supply the old XP CD when asked.

Abit AN8

I just had to get in here and tell you that I'm running an AN8 Ultra. AMD 3500+ ; 4GIG ram. That last 2 gig ram was so costy made my nose bleed. I like the old machine, and it runs W7 beautifully but I don't do much except browse the net.
Bob could tell you this, but Microsoft intends for OEM to be installed on one machine only. If you build new, they want to sell you another license. Maybe just keep your OEM, love that old Abit rig a while longer until you can get new one built, then use your new W7 on new rig?

W-7 reinstall

Well what I was trying to get at was that if I installed it to my present machine the intent was to install another mobo and do a clean reinstall of the hard drive so it would find the new mobo and the HDD would have a clean install I don't understand how MS or anyone can make a case for installing the OS in two machines, it'll be the same rig but a new mobo and cpu on the same rig. And I don't know what the activation process is like. I know that in the olden days of XP if you did an upgrade and the period was greater then 90 (or some number) days or so you could reactivate it. Which is where I was trying to go with this.

I'm pretty fed up with Vista and it's endless circle of 'wasted' life...lol...guess that's the improvement over XP no more BSODs just an endless non-responding circle....!! Ha.....
