VPN netmask problem

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate. I also experience this problem using XP.

When I attempt to connect to a large VPN network that has more than a single class C block of addresses, I am unable to access anything but the block of addresses that my assigned IP is in.

As a work around, I am able to run a route add statement to change the netmask and router the entire range to the vpn network and it works.. Like this...

route add 192.168.34.0 mask 255.255.240.0 192.168.34.13
