1. A VPN doesn't protect you at all against bad content you download from a file sharing site. You get exactly the same bytes on your PC when you download from a sharing site via your ISP only or via your ISP combined with a VPN network. It only takes longer because more servers are involved. Our advice: (1) only download from sites you trust, and (2) you can't trust a file sharing site.
2. Ask Suddenlink how to unprotect their modem. Or find another ISP if they don't tell. Why do you want to open ports they consider dangerous?
3. I don't see any objection to using Microsoft cipher-program for wiping free space, but I note it's a function in ccleaner also. Your choice.
4. For protecting against unauthorised reading use Bitlocker that comes with Windows 10 Pro.
Hey everyone, am a bit of a noob, but have used the service just a few years ago. My question is that I am using Suddenlink internet as my ISP and am thinking, or have been thinking for sometime that I should really be using a VPN, especially since I DL files from file sharing.
Nothing bad I'm DL'ing just bad, but I never know what or if I'm DL'ing legit files or not and if not I'd like some protection behind me.
Last question the Suddenlink modem/router will not allow me access to be able to open ports. Does anyone know a way to hack or tell me how to get the username and password to get past this bit of a roadblock.
Can anyone please recommend a VPN that I can trust to encrypt my data as I send it and again if I decide to UL.
Looking for something good, but not one that's going to break me.
Also are there any programs that you guys are using to keep all data on a Win 10 PC both wiped/unrecoverable in all aspects of the PC except those areas that include files already saved to HD and in use?
Was thinking of going to "Command Prompt" and using the code
"cipher /w:C" which is my understanding is built into Win 10 and will wipe all free space 3X so that no information is recoverable.
I am doing work for TBE and I cannot leave any data on this PC that can ever be recovered for someone to cause fraud or identity theft. It's a desktop at home but anything can happen this day and time.
What programs (preferably freeware) that I can use to encrypt the remaining data so it cannot be read without entering a password?
Thanks everyone.. I'll be on more and more as time goes and hope I can return the favor sometime.
Thanks. Wes
