Volume goes automatically to 0 on my Samsung LCD TV

Jan 24, 2009 9:34PM PST

Hi,

I have a Samsung LA32M51BS LCD TV. The last few days something strange is happening to the TV: When I turn on the TV, the volume is at 0. If I try ty turn up the colume, nothing happens (though the blue colored light on the TV is flashing). If I try to turn up the volume by pressing the + button on the TV itself, the volume goes up, but as soon as I release the button, the sound goes down to 0 again! I tried to take the batteries out of the remote to see if it's the remote that's messing up, but it didn't help. Does anyone know what could be the cause of this problem? Someone experienced the same?

Joe - don't you ever sleep ?....lol
I'll try the disconnection of the side controls board..and report back.
Model LNS 2652 dx....
She is now face down on a towel, awaiting the removal of many Phillip screws...then we shall see.
19 screws later, using the HF $3 LED flashlight, a Phillips magnet screwdriver, a very small slot screwdriver, and a good shot of confidence, the cancer was removed...very easily.
I never use the side controls....its as if a ghost was always pressing the Volume - key.

Thanks to all who post here.

Had the same problem, unplugged the side panel controls, works great now. Is this a problem Samsung has addressed? I find it quite frustrating so many people have experienced the same problem. Next time, no Samsung.

Maddening volume and remote issue
Oct 29, 2014 9:54AM PDT

Thank you Joe for sharing your remedy. I really love my Samsung LN37A********** and although I am not necessarily pleased with the company, I would buy another Samsung tv. The problem manifested about 3 weeks ago and a tech on Samsung site suggested upgrading the firmware, which I did and it seemed to be fine. Then a few days ago it began doing it again, the tv did not respond consistently to the remote and the volume kept automatically going to 0, no matter where I tried to set it (by remote or by the side control button). It kept cycling, bringing up an error popup even when I was able to go to the menu and turn off the tv speakers. Again, Samsung was no help. They said it sounded like the infrared unit was bad and that the tv was out of warranty, would need service and I would be solely responsible for the cost. Thank goodness I kept checking online and finally found this post. Thanks again. Now I don't have to go through the expense of repair or purchasing a new set.

Volume goes automatically to 0 and the Remote doesn't work.
Feb 19, 2012 6:44PM PST

Hi,
I have two Samsung TV's Model LE19B450C4W, one has displayed the same problems as a few people have found on this forum. Firstly thank you, to all those who have offered advice. I have resolved the problem by disconnecting the wires to the motherboard that operates the side panel buttons. I have no technical abilities at all, but I thought I would give it a go and it worked. I took off the back cover and located the wires that led to the motherboard of the side panel control buttons, I then prised the white connector away and covered it with tape. I replaced the back cover and hey presto the tv works by remote control. Thanks again guys.

Do not cut

I'd not cut anything, just gently disconnect the 3 leads to the side controls.
The little pocket screwdriver is your friend.

I had the same problem (no control of volume or channel selection with tv or remote controls) and applied the aforementioned remedy (disconnecting the wire from the IR board to the side panel controls) with success. God bless Joe and the others who responded with solutions. I hope I have a chance to pay this forward. I can't believe I just fixed my 58" TV myself with no more than a screwdriver. The controls on the TV don't work anymore but I never used them anyway.

Pictures?
Nov 8, 2012 4:13AM PST

Of course I'm having the same problem or I wouldnt be here I unplugged the white connector and the volume is still going down. Could someone post a picture of what I'm suppose to unplug, I want to make sure I unplugged the right thing. The cable I did unplug I didnt have to take the whole back off. I lifted the back part , bottom on same side as volume controls and unplugged that one.

replace the board
May 17, 2013 12:50PM PDT

I had the same issue with my samsung 5series lcd TV and resolved this issue by replacing the touch sensor board. it was rather easy to replace. unscrew about 10 screws on the back of the tv, remove metal clips on the lower clear panel to access this board. unplug the connector, use flat head screwdriver to remove the board from front panel as it is glued on. be careful not to damage the front bezel.

purchased the board from
Part Type:Assy Board P-Touch Function
Key Controller Board
IR Remote Sensor

Think I've found the cause of the issue.
Nov 17, 2013 2:00AM PST

I too have a B series LCD (mine is the LE40B530P7W), of which I have just disconnected the side controls. I actually separated the PCB from the plastic button unit, then screwed the button unit back into place minus the PCB. (applied a bit of tape over the connector just to be safe). Problem gone now so far touchwood.

I've had a look at the PCB since, and for those of you who know what I'm about to say, the buttons are all commoned to ground, and each button has a resistor in series with its high side of varying value connecting it to a data line (with a pull-up resistor further down the line somewhere I assume). Now, it so happens that the highest value (18K) is fitted to the switch that controls VOL minus. Also across that data line is a capacitor, (probably a 100nF). So, I wouldn't mind betting that capacitor has gone slightly leaky, presenting a resistance across the data line just enough to fool the control stage into thinking the VOL minus button is being pressed. I would replace the capacitor, but to be honest the TV is back together now, working, and I have no need for the side buttons so guess I'll just leave it as it is.

Hope this helps explain the issue. Happy

Hi, I just fixed this problem with volume.
Apr 6, 2015 1:25PM PDT

I used my remote while I was standing very close to my TV. I clicked on " menu" button to get to the sound mode which is located just after picture mode. Once you are on sound mode click on right arrow button and move down until you see "Auto volume". It will show "OFF" status. By highlighting it, select and switch from OFF to ON status and your problem with TV voice will be solved.

Volume Automatically Goes to 0 - Unplug TV for Several Days
Aug 22, 2015 7:27AM PDT

I have a Samsung UN55ES6100FXZA 55" 1080p LED TV that is 3 years old and recently when I turned the TV on, the volume went to 0 like someone was holding down the remote control volume down button. I thought maybe there was a problem w/ one of the remotes, so I took the batteries out of each, but the problem was not caused by either remote. Then I tried unplugging the TV for a minute or two. When I plugged the TV back in, it automatically turned on without hitting the power button, the volume was at 0 like someone was holding down the volume down button, and I could not turn off the TV using the remote. So I unplugged the TV. All of the internet postings were no help. My TV does not have any buttons for power or to change channels or volume. Everything works through the remote. That night, I plugged the TV back in and the volume was at 0, but not like someone was holding down the volume button. Problem fixed? Not quite. I increased the volume, started watch TV, then, after about two minutes, the volume went to 0 again and I could not turn off the TV again. So I unplugged the TV and came back about five days later. I plugged the TV back in and the TV worked fine.

Try unplugging the TV for several days.

Fix for Samsung LCDTV volume automatically going to 0 or 100
Oct 1, 2015 5:44AM PDT

I got this info from others on this forum, and it worked perfectly on my Samsung TV.

1.) Remove the screws from the back of the TV
2.) Pry the back off after removing screws with a straight-end screwdriver
3.) Look to the side of the TV where the volume, on-off, etc. controls are located
4.) Unplug the connection going to these controls with needle point pliers

Remote should work after this procedure with no more volume problems.

Volume drop on Samsung tv
Jan 1, 2016 9:24AM PST

I also had the same problem with my 32inch Samsung. So I took the advice of removing the back off the TV and disconnecting the 3 wires that go to the control buttons on the side . I had to cut through the 2 white and 1 orange wires that are connected to the small circuit on the volume and channel selector buttons etc.
Obviously I can now only use the remote but I never used the buttons anyway. One tip, leave the 3 wires exposed, don't tape them up, I did that at first and the remote didn't work.

Joe's Solution Works, Did More Please Read On
Jan 22, 2016 11:49PM PST

Joe,

The solution given by you still works. I read your 2012 post and in 2016 when I faced the issue with my Samsung TV Model No. LA32S71BX/XTL, it worked.

After removing the back panel to access the side control buttons,
In fact I went a step ahead and actually opened the side control unit post disconnecting the 4 wire jumper (3 white, 1 blue) which on my model is separate for this section which controls, Menu, Source, Volume Up/Down and Channel Up/Down buttons only.

This specific part has a plastic buttons unit which we see on the outside and a Circuit Board which houses the buttons. These circuit board buttons are pressed when we use any of the buttons from the side panel, with the help of these plastic buttons. These plastic buttons are just push buttons and do not house any circuits on them. Hence post removing this part from the main TV, I unlocked the circuit board from these buttons panels (6 plastic locks that need to be released very carefully and gently). Post that I cleaned the Button Tops that are soldered on to the circuit board with a cleaning fluid. My TV is 9 yrs old and there was too much dust in this circuit part between the buttons and the circuit boards, this could probably be the one causing the Volume to go down on its own. After cleaning it thoroughly I ensured that the part dries up completely and then I reattached the plastic button panel to the circuit board. I reconnected back the board with the jumper cable, reattached to the TV unit and did a test run, it worked perfectly !

So while 1 option as mentioned by you is to disconnect the side panel buttons and only use the Remote Control for these functions.

The Option 2 is to clean the specific part with a little careful handling, as it does work perfectly after it. Hence getting to use the side panel and the remote, as originally designed.

Needless to say that the Option 2 needs careful handling and should be done at your own risks, Option 1 is quick and simple.

Thanks again Joe, I had nearly researched buying a new LED FHD, but your post has given the old LCD some more life now.

Fix to volume problem
Jan 27, 2016 5:11AM PST

I had same problem. I removed the back of the tv and unplugged the wires leading to the controls on the right side of the tv. This cured the problem but need the remote to control the tv. TV works fine now.

Same volume goues up and down problem here
Feb 7, 2016 11:55AM PST

I have the same experience: for 2 weeks till now this is happening with my LE40b530p7wxzg Samsung TV (about 6 years old): all day its fine, then suddenly the volume goes down to zero. I turn it up again. Sometime it works, sometime it seems like the down button would be pushed continuously: like a fight for up vs down. The strange thing is that the speed of going down is various. Sometimes it even goes up to 100%. remains there, and after 5 minutes it goes down again. Like somebody making fun of me with a different remote control. I blocked the receiver spot on the tv, so its not a remote.
Is this some pre-programmed thing from samsung? for 6 years its ok, then this happens?? And its not a stuck button or something like that..
Can somebody help me? Secret reset code or something?
Thanks
B.

It can be a button randomly failing. Did you unplug the buttons?
Did you avoid HDMI port 2?

Samsung TV goes crazy
Mar 25, 2016 12:51PM PDT

Hi guys

I have LE32C550i.. the red diod was blinking like crazy and TV went into shop mode, eventhought I set it to standard. Then I realize, that somehow the button TV control buttons got stuck. When I touch few of them, the diod stops blinking, TV works fine, then after few seconds, the menu pops up, or Volume goes down. So I start to suspicious that the bottom panel is corrupted. After hit this forum, I opened the rear panel, but unfortunatelly, the only thing that goes to the button panel is just 1 plug with 8 wires. 1 is blue others are black. When I unplug it, I cannot start the TV, because the panel is unplugged and IR sensor obviously too. So I have no choice but to cut wire by wire. The solution for me was, to leave the blue wire (seems to me, its for remote control) and cut from the right side black wire by wire to remove the stuck buttons. At the end I cut 4 black wires and TV works perfectly. The button panel is completlelly disabled, expect the IR sensor. Hope it helps. Sorry for no pictures.

Fixed the Problem of the Volume doing it's own thing
May 5, 2016 10:29AM PDT

We had exactly the same problem/issue. All of a sudden we were watching the TV and the volume went to 0. The remote wouldn't do a thing to change it. Then after messing with it, and leaving the room, it went to 100...and started screaming. Long story short, I found a reply from Joe much further below in this forum who said "it's the side panel that manually controls the volume, menu, channel, etc, not the remote." It made sense, cuz the side panel buttons weren't responding, to anything either. So we opened the back of the TV, and found that there is a small circuit board about 1"x 2" at the bottom of the TV with a single screw holding it it. If you remove the screw, you'll see that it's the Infra Red light on the opposite side. There is a small connector going into this circuit board from the outside panel buttons, and a larger ribbon cable going to the rest of the TV. If you disconnect that smaller cable that goes to the side panel buttons, it will disable them, and remove the issue. Only the remote will work, but that's fine for us. So that's what we did, and Voala.....it's back to normal. Yeah!!!!
